A cold war is a type of war where the opposing sides don't directly attack each other through violence. There are no troops , weapons, or battlefields, but there is a lot of tension. The countries try to out-maneuver and out do their opponents, and there is lots of competition in that. For example, countries will try to be the best economically, politically, culturally, and athletically. There is still lots of fighting and tension, but you don't actually see the fight; there are no weapons or battlegrounds that soldiers fight on.

The whole country of Vietnam was suffering from Imperialism from the European countries, and they were taking their sources and losing money. However, North and South Vietnam are very divided because of their different views on the government system. North Vietnam wanted a communist government, while the South wanted to stick with the democratic government. These opposing viewpoints split up the country into North and South territories, and the war started to set in between the two sides.

How and Why the US Got Involved

When the war was starting, the US didn't take part in it that much. They were mostly doing some behind the scenes work that didn't affect the war too much. However, in 1964, the war was getting serious, and the US felt that it was time to deploy troops. The main reason for this was to help South Vietnam with the War. North Vietnam wanted communism, and the US was certainly against it. They wanted to keep up their method of containment, and they couldn't let the Northerns spread communism. The US feared that if they won, then other countries would switch to communism, and the whole world would be subjected to it. There were some other smaller reasons too, like economic and political rights.

How and Why the Soviets Got Involved

The Soviets decided to stick with North Vietnam. However, they took a lot more of an aggressive approach than the US. They got involved right away, sending out troops and weapons to keep the Southerns away from their territory. They had a lot of weapons, like tanks, rifles, ammunition, and artillery. They were very interested and devoted to their cause because they really wanted to spread the influence of communism around the world. They also wanted to get credit for spreading it, and they believed that it was the only government system that was right for the world.

1. May 7, 1954: The Vietnam troops managed to take over the main base of France, and it ended a century of French rule. This was significant because it really gained momentum for the whole country of Vietnam. It inspired them to fight more, and they wanted more rights.
2. July 21, 1954: The 17th parallel, or DMZ, is officially constructed and set between the country. This was significant because it now stated that the two sides were officially enemies and that they will not be reuniting for a long time.
3. August 5, 1964: The US reported that torpedoes attacked and destroyed some of their destroyer boats. When the President and Congress heard about this they debated and said that they should take every necessary measure to help repel North Vietnam. This is significant because it represented that the US wasn't joking around. They couldn't let North Vietnam stop them so easily, and they officially decided to engage in the war.
4. January 30, 1968: The North Vietnam side decided to launch an attack across five major cities of the South. It was also their new year called Tet, and they wanted to start it off with a literal bang. They sent 85,000 troops in total along with lots of weapons like tanks and artillery.
5. November 15, 1969: The US had been in the war for over 5 years, and the people back home were starting to get frustrated. They felt like the US should stop fighting because it looked like the war would end in a stalemate. This idea led to many antiwar protests, and they became some of the largest protests in US history.

What Happened at the End of the War?

April 1975, North Vietnam declared victory and forced the Southerners to surrender. The whole country of Vietnam went under communist rule and was now identified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. One major effect of the war was the mass amount of casualties in the country. The total death toll was about 3.3 million people in Vietnam, and there were many more injured or missing. Also, another major effect was the physical damage done to the country. The US dropped 8 million tons of bombs on the country, and many of them failed to explode. This caused problems for the country, as they were dangerous to remove. Also, the chemical Agent Orange destroyed tones of forest and landscape in the country. It became more difficult to grow food there, and there was lots of habitat loss in the country.

This war is just a small war compared to the Cold War. For the US, it represents their big fight and struggle of preventing communism across the world. It also made it clear that the USSR was our enemy because they always took the opposing side of us, and we were always going against them. For the US, we believed that communism would have a domino effect. If one country tipped over and turned communist, then other countries would follow. Today, Vietnam still remains one of the poorest countries in the world, and the war is a big contributor to that. For example, the chemical agent orange has still left its impact on the environment, and they are still struggling to recover their forests and landscape. This causes economic loss for Vietnam, as they are losing their main exports like corn, sweet potatoes, and nuts.
