Introduction

As we can see in Ch1 of Ratliff's book we observe that he analyzes the concept of repetition. In my own words I would define repetition as the reoccurring sounds and words in a song(s) that give off certain emotions and meanings.
I do agree with Ratliff’s argument that he makes about repetition and how it applies not just throughout music but in our own behavior as well. As Ratliff explains his argument he also points out the good aspects of repetition. For example, he quotes that "Repetition is a sign of health." Which not only signifies that it's a good thing to have repetition but that it's a healthy element to have within songs of all kind. I couldn't agree even more with him. He examines every aspect of repetition in the songs he lists out in chapter 1. He analyzes how the artist repeat certain words or sounds in their music and defines repetition in his own words for each piece. Ratliff seems to have a positive outlook on repetition and signifies it as a positive musical element that adds to the meaning of each song. Each song he mentions has emotions that are often repeated in detail within the song. It adds flavor to the song, I guess one can say.

This example, in Ratliff's playlist exemplifies the musical concept of repetition by the repetition of the words "walking on sunshine" explaining how the women exphasizes her love for this guy and how everytime she sees him it makes her feel good, feel happy, and excited. This "repetition is a sign of health"(Ratliff,16) as he explains. It corralates with how the artist feels in the song. Feelings that are positive, that are good, and that portay healthy emotions.

This example, outside of Raliff's playlist exemplifies the musical concept of repetion by the way the artist describes how she wants to go to the mall with her friends. She is speaking to her friends and repeating "let's go to the mall". Such positive enrgy she releases in those few words. The repetition allows for the listener to actually want to go to mall!
