However, nothing works, as every employee knows that if they put Jake in trouble, they're also putting their position at risk. In the first scene, Jake is building an adult diaper castle. Then a girl from Jake's math class comes up. Jake tries to strike up a conversation with the girl, but she ignores Jake and jokes around with her friends, which leads to them knocking over Jake's work. We see how Jake is not popular and is awkward with girls. 'Them' meaning hallowgahsts, monsters in Jacob's world. Jake just thinks that his grandpa is being weird because he has dementia. It's night by the time Aunt Shelly and Jake arrive at Grandpa Portman's house. Someone broke into the house, and Jake finds Grandpa Portman on the ground of the forest behind the house. Grandpa Portman is bloody and has his eyes ripped out of their sockets. In his dying moments, Grandpa Portman tells Jake, "You have to get away from here. Please. Listen. Go to the island. Find Emerson. The postcard. Go to the loop. September 3, 1943. I know you think I'm crazy, but the bird will explain everything. Will you do this, Tygrysku? Promise me? I thought I could protect you. Jake and his father travel to the island, and Jake roams around to find the home. Miss Peregrine, in bird form, saw Jake sailing to the island, so she sent the kids after him. They find Jake, take him to the time loop where Miss Peregrine and the children hide in. They converse, meet with everyone, and slowly we discover all of the kids' individual peculiarities. One of them, Mr. Barron, believed that by harnessing the essence of an Ymbryne's powers, he and his cronies could gain immortality. So, in a failed experiment, the poor peculiars turned into eyeball-hungry creatures. Now, the hollowghasts are on the hunt for more peculiars' eyeballs, Miss Peregrine's and children's.
