In Japan, Children’s Day falls on May 5th every year. On that day, we display armors and helmets (We call them “YOROI KABUTO” in Japanese) in our house. This custom began at BUKE or Bushi Family. (Bushi is Samurai Warrior in Japan.) Bushi offered the armors and helmets to the Shrine before the battle wishing for their safety. Derived from this custom, we display armors on Children’s Day in order to protect children from disease and injuries.
As for the Carp Streamers, it is said that Old Chinese Legend 『登竜門』was the origin of this custom. 『竜門』is the falls on the steep mountain. According to the Legend, only the carps which swim up the big falls would be the dragons and fly up to the sky. So, “carp” is the fortune symbol of Promotion overcoming hardships and adversities. They wish their children to be like ‘carps’. This is why we display carp streamers on Children’s Day.
