There is a difference between resources, experiences, vocabulary, access to 'stuff' which, in some cases my create inequities in school. This is true for being able to participate in extra curricular activities that have a cost or need transportation. When students are hungry, cold, lacking sleep - etc. - they may have other worries on their mind or may not have the fuel or gas to be focused on academics. Sometimes as teachers we are not aware of the barriers or needs or perpetuate the problem when we are not conscious of it. Access to the internet, having a home computer - can be limiting when students do not have access - and while the data might be small - the number of families may not be a lot - we are still contributing to the issues when we are not aware of our expectations for homework or other kinds of projects kids are required to do at home. We are thankful we have a breakfast program. One to one technology program has helped as well.
