Engineering unit: We created a materials bag for students to pick up from school. Using those materials or items from around their homes, students are doing home engineering labs. We were worried about this at first, but overall students seem very engaged when using actual materials.

Some practices that have been working:

Consistent Lab Groups: Throughout a lab, students check in (using breakout rooms) with the same team daily. We created these similar to how we'd craft in-person student groups.

They self assign jobs on their team (facilitator, notetaker, or timekeeper/liaison). We include icons to represent what each group member should be reading aloud/doing in the directions. There is also sometimes a script linked for more extended groupwork. (see below)

Students also give daily feedback on how the team is doing on exit checks and regularly via Google Forms surveys. Students report they like this (it allows for consistency).

We have at least 1 small group happening that is heavily teacher- facilitated during this time (for high-needs students)- 1 teacher focuses on the highest needs groups while the other does general pop-ins into breakout rooms.

Zoom + GoogleDocs handout (cloze notes) for students to use while in class especially on days with group work in breakouts- helps to have any group directions on the handout.

Students share photos/videos/reflections of their work on Padlet/Flipgrid (which is set up to be open to the whole grade, not just one cohort)-

Marshmallow Challenge Padlet: https://padlet.com/pthaker1/9y3628tad2ej7iqw

Boat Building Challenge: https://padlet.com/pthaker1/ov1xpfqktnwb5fry

In reviewing for our end of unit test, students are learning 4 (of many study habits and practicing them during class:
Study Habit 1: Work first then check an answer key. Students fill out their personal word walls, then check it against a teacher provided answer key.
Study Habit 2: Study groups with peers. Students work together in breakout room to answer review questions.
Study Habit 3: Quiz yourself
We used a kahoot to show them but will in the future show then other ways to quiz themselves (i.e. flashcards)
Study Habit 4: Work off a review sheet
