The Earth on Turtles Back

Native Americans have great respect for the natural world and believes that each animal has its own power. They believe that before the earth existed it was only water and in the water was birds and animal swimming around. Above the clouds was the sky land with a big tree that held all the flowers and bushes. In the sky land was an ancient chief and his wife was expecting a child but she had a dream that the great tree was going to be uprooted. The ancient chief knew they had to do everything possible to make that come true. The chief uprooted the tree and left a big hole in the sky and his wife slipped into the hole grabbing seed off the tree when trying to hold on. The animals below saw her falling and the swans flew up and broke her fall and they relies she can't live in water. They remember that far below the water is Earth so they started diving down to try and grab earth. The muskrat was able to grab earth but almost died, they didn't know where to put earth but the turtle said to put it on his back. So the earth grew on his back and the lady was placed of the earth and dropped the seeds and plants started to grow, and that's how the earth was created.

The creator sat alone thinking and with his thoughts he formed mother nature, and so he covered the earth with plants, trees, birds and animals. But he became lonely so from the soil of the earth a created two companions, a man and a woman. Beside the man he placed a bow and arrow, to show the man that he was the protector and provider. Beside the woman was a basket full of seeds to represent the natural resources given. Then the creator blew life into both of them and they both understood their duties. So the creator told them to take care of mother earth and she will take care of them.

They are both Origin story's and honestly there are more differences than similarities in these story but there are a few. Like they both have powerful people, in Earth on Turtles Back in the Ancient Chief and in the Ojibwe its the creator. They both also respect and treat earth well and only take what they need.

There are many differences between these story's like in the Ojibwe there is a high power or "Creator" but in the Turtle one I wouldn't say that the Ancient Chief was a God. Also in the Earth on Turtles back there are a lot of animals and flowers but in the Ojibwe its just the people and the things that the creator gave them. The tone of the story's are also different with the Earth on Turtles Back being a fun and fairytale-like story but the Ojibwe is more serious and tells the people that they need to treat the earth right because it was given to them by the "Creator".

The tone of The Earth on the Turtles back was much more lighthearted and fairytale-like, whereas the Ojibwe Origin story was much more serious and almost like the creator telling them how they need to live their life. Here is a quote form the Ojibwe story "Don't get greedy. Take only what you need, and remember to put down tobacco before you take from Mother Earth."
