Victims of The Holocaust

The Holocaust, a genocide of 11 million people that were deemed unworthy of living in Hitler’s world. So many deaths because of one evil and truly deplorable man. 6 million of those ruthlessly killed were those of the Jewish faith or suspected of it. The other 5 million aren’t really talked about especially during the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The other 5 million people who were killed weren’t Jewish. In fact some weren’t religious at all.

Polish Victims

The first huge group of people that were killed by the Nazis were the citizens of Poland. Germany invaded Poland and had successfully overtaken their neighboring country within a month. The citizens of Poland were imprisoned against their will and many were sent to concentration camps. Hitler wanted “All Poles to disappear from the world”. The non-Jewish citizens of Poland were imprisoned in their own country and forced into slave labor.

LGBTQ+ Victims

            Another group of victims that are scarcely mentioned are people of the LGBTQ Community. They aren’t mentioned because of the huge amount of homophobia that still surrounds the world. Another reason is because those who did survive the concentration camps buried away their trauma and the reason they were sent there. So most people don’t know that LGBTQ Individuals were targeted by the Nazis. Unfortunately people who were known to be gay or suspected of being gay were arrested and sent to concentration camps. About 100,000 people were arrested for being LGBTQ and between 5,000 and 15,000 of those arrested were sent to concentration camps. And unfortunately being LGBTQ meant you were at the bottom of the pack in the concentration camps. And about 60% of those sent to the camps perished.
Religious Victims

            A religious group targeted by the Nazis were Jehovah’s Witnesses. They were considered dangerous traitors to Germany because they would not accept and believe in the Nazis Ideology of religion. Hitler felt particularly threatened by this strong group of Christians because they, from the very beginning, refused to recognize any other God then Jehovah. Jehovah’s Witnesses stood firm in their beliefs unlike any other group of religions that the Nazis targeted.

The Nazis also targeted the Catholics, specifically the Catholic church in Poland. The church was quickly suppressed by the Nazis when they overtook Poland and nearly a fifth of all the priests were killed. Around 3,000 priests were killed and most of them were killed in concentration camps.

Roma Gypsies were the next religious target that Hitler and the Nazis ruthlessly killed. The reason they were targeted was because Hitler was very egocentric and manipulative and was able to brainwash people into serving him. Hitler believed that German’s were the ultimate race and everyone else was inferior. So he targeted the Roma Gypsies and wiped out almost half a million of the entire population of Roma Gypsies.

 Disabled Victims

People who had physical and mental disabilities were another unfortunate group of Hitler’s victims. Hitler deemed them as useless and unworthy of life. So those who had mental and physical disabilities

were among the first people sent straight to the gas chambers. Their murders were hidden behind the phrase “mercy killings”. Thousands were murdered because it was “merciful”. The Nazis believed the

disabled did not deserve to live so killing them was good and was doing the world a service.

Experiment Victims

            It is no secret that Nazis did experiments on unwilling subjects, however some of the most disturbing and horrific experiments were tested on children, identical twins to be precise. These twins were stolen away from their families and experimented on by a notorious doctor. Dr Josef Mengele he was a Nazi doctor and was well known for his horrific torture and unethical experiments on identical twins. Some of the experiments he would do would cause extreme pain to the test subject. Such as unnecessary amputations, and injecting various chemicals into patients eyes, and bodies. Dr Mengele would watch as these children would suffer and die from these horrific experiments and had no remorse for his deplorable actions.

Victim of Identical Twin Experiments

            A victim of Dr. Josef Mengele decided to speak up about her and her sister’s experiences with the demented doctor. Eva Mozes Kor and her twin sister Miriam were both 10 years old when they were separated from their family when they arrived at Auschwitz. Their entire family was killed within 30 minutes of arriving at Auschwitz. Eva and Miriam were lab subjects 6 days a week and the twins were treated like pieces of meat. Dr. Mengele injected Eva with bacteria through five large needles in her arm. As a result of this Eva became extremely ill and nearly died she miraculously survived that horrible experiment as she says “due to her determination to pull through”. Eva and Miriam survived the horrible experiments performed on them by Dr. Mengele and were among just 200 sets of twins who also survived out of almost 1,500 sets of twins experimented on. Eva has since forgiven the Nazis for what they did to her and her sister. She also visits Auschwitz where she dances on the platform where she last saw her family to honor them.

CONCLUSION

The Holocaust was a horrific event that many hope will never happen again especially the survivors. Of the 11 million killed many only know of the Jews and don’t recognize the many other groups of people targeted by Hitler and the Nazis. Many of the non-Jewish victims speak out and work to raise awareness that the Holocaust was responsible for the deaths of many Jewish and non-Jewish people.

They aren’t mentioned because of the huge amount of homophobia that still surrounds the world.
