Hi all,
Hope you're getting on okay with deadlines and exams. It's the time of term where James and I have a course rep meeting (May 3rd). Your previous feedback has been invaluable to us; and the staff were highly grateful so, please keep it up! Please consider, this is our last meeting of the academic year so your last chance to have your say. Any feedback you have will be super helpful so we can make sure your opinions are, anonymously and collectively, voiced to staff.

All feedback is appreciated, whether it big or small, negative or positive. E.g. if you find your deadlines are too close together, you're more than welcome to say so. You may also be loving a certain aspect of a certain module so, again, please mention these too!! We encourage you to voice ANYTHING course related :)

You can pop your comments on here (anonymously, if you wish). Alternatively, if you are unfamiliar with padlet, you can always drop me and/or James a line or approach us in person, if you see us around. Obviously, this way, James and/or I will know who you are however, if you're worried about this, in meetings, we refer to your feedback as "student's say..." so they won't know who said what.

Best of luck with your work... I'm sure you'll all do fab! And thanks in advance for your feedback and comments.

Rosie and James

rosie.daly2013@my.ntu.ac.uk
james.donovan2008@my.ntu.ac.uk

The structure of the course should be improved for future students.
1) The deadlines are so close together yet our dissertation isn't due till August - why are they not spread out?
2) Having an exam in the middle of these assignments isn't helpful - it could be at the end of our deadlines (June).
3) From the start of Contemp Issues, the assignment was not fully explained. This is a shame because the taught content was interesting, yet I was unable to make any links until the very end. Similarly, I am disappointed with ACFI as I feel the module was not taught very well and I am confused about the upcoming exam. I have spoken to many people who agree that these two modules are not satisfactory.
Nevertheless, the Psych Well-being lecturers (Rebecca/Blerina) are great. They were clear, organised and enthusiastic throughout so please can you pass this on.
Thank you

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, of course... this will get mentioned by myself and James.

Rosie

Overall across the course, I think the structure of all the deadlines are far too close together. We had very few in the first half of the year and the second term, in comparison to these few weeks now. All of the deadlines due now make up the bulk of our course, and completing them in such a time constraint is likely to effect some students' performance. Perhaps spreading the deadlines across all three terms would be more helpful.

Contemporary Issues was a really interesting module with great teaching of the material, however I felt i did not understand the assessment from the beginning, despite the details of the assessment spec and the lecturers guidance. I feel an example of structure of what is expected would be a useful tool to look at in starting the module, as it is such a different, unfamiliar type of assessment.

The ACFI module was really good and interesting, a valuable module for students thinking of working in psychotherapy, it was useful having guidance from an experienced psychotherapist. She made it clear of showing us what would be expected in the exam with previous report examples throughout the term, and provided a module review and support session at the end of term 2. However, I feel the module would've been more suited to a coursework assessment, because it would give students more of an idea, and more practice, of knowing what is expected in writing clinical reports.

I would just like to add that the course tutors have been extremely helpful in terms of providing support and guidance throughout the year. I would like to thank all of the lecturers teaching on the modules this year, they have all been really helpful and provided support throughout the terms, in and out of lecture time.

Thank you for your feedback!! A lot of what you say has been echoed, as you can see. We will be sure to also mention your praise towards the teaching on this course.

Rosie

I really enjoyed contemporary issues, but i found the assessment so confusing. Also on the discussion board things were added last minuet (such as contemporary means 2015 upwards) which meant I had to re-do areas of it. In the last session we all had many questions and Simon didn't feel confident to answer them (which was more that fair) but really we could have done with the last session with Eva or a booster. I did think the discussion board was very useful though.

Thank you for mentioning this. The assessment has been brought to our attention a couple times so we will be sure this gets fed back to staff.

Rosie

Firstly, I agree with the common opinion that all the deadlines are far too close together. I feel like some of the deadlines could have been later on in term 3. I think having the theory and app deadline just a day after the ACFI exam is far too close and quite harsh. I feel that either way, one of the module will suffer as my attention is mainly going on the exam revision, only leaving a day to prepare a whole presentation with months worth of work to go into it.
I am really struggling to understand the ACFI exam. I understand the first question, mainly due to the examples presented in class, but I do not agree with this being in the format of an exam. It does not reflect how a report of this kind would be written in a real life scenario. I don't feel like we've been given enough information about the second question on the exam. There are a lot of example questions but these are all so different, of which most of the topics were not covered in depth in class, which has been extremely hard to even know where to begin revising for it.
Overall, I enjoyed the contemporary issues module, well most of it anyway, but found the assessment so confusing. I feel that this could have been explained much better and could have been referred to more in the lectures, with how the content presented in the lectures could fit in the assessment.

Thanks! Both issues and positive aspects mentioned here will be mentioned to staff.

Rosie

First of all I would like to say that the majority of these comments seem to be about not understanding assessments, it would massively help if you actually turned up to the lectures and tutorials. After attending everything, yes some things have been challenging but not so hard that I've had a melt down in the library.
Reading these comments about how confused people were over ACFI, if you went and listened to what Eva had to say, then you'd understand. She has a hell of a lot of knowledge about what she does and if you could have had the respect to listen to her you might have understood.
Yes contemporary issues was a bit of a jumble and a book proposal wasn't at all what I was expecting as an assessment. But again, if people turned up and listened then they would have made connections and themes easily.
Personally, after being in a job that involved supporting with people with mental health issues, I don't feel I need to make a CV cover letter etc. But I understand its about ticking boxes for the uni to get higher numbers of people in to employment.
The specialist essay seemed so pointless. Receiving feedback a day and a half late, and then to see it was only 8 bullet point and a few bits of text in bold seemed so unrewarding! It was just another assessment that could have been done and dusted right at the beginning.
Having an exam was stressful, especially having a deadline the following day. Spreading out the deadlines would have helped us all out.
Some things definitely need to be better organised, and communication between lectures would be helpful, especially as some of them have said one thing to us and others have said the opposite. Clear example of certain people in Theory & Ap!

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We value your point of view and we will mention this feedback during our meeting.

Rosie

1) The contemporary assignment should have been explained better in class and not on the discussion board a week before the deadline.
2) Deadlines are too close together having a book proposal, exam and a presentation handed in within a matter of 9 days do not any sense - there is no way that a good quality piece of work would have been produced with such a tight schedule.
3) I don't really see the link between Theory and App Term 1 and 2. The structure of the course should be reconsidered and having EBL was not useful at all.

Thanks! We shall be certain to raise this as it is something these posts have in common.

Rosie

In agreement with some of the other comments on here, I would like to praise the assessment, case formulation module. I have heard a lot of negative comments by other students across the course I don't agree with. It was a really good module, and Eva has such a huge amount of knowledge and experience, which clearly came across in all of her lectures.
With regards to the exam. The layout of it was made clear from the beginning of the year. Most of all the lectures in term 2, which I noticed class attendance was low, the exam was mentioned. Across the year, example reports were shown to us to see how clinical reports are laid out. And example questions were looked at towards the end of term 2. Both of these gave clear guidance on what to expect in the exam, alongside the reiteration of the layout in many of the lectures.

Cheers!! Thank you for this opinion. We will be sure to raise the praise :)

Rosie

In relation to the Contemporary Issues in Mental Health module, I feel there needs to be a restructuring especially as it lead to some confusion regarding the book proposal assessment. Each block, for the most part, was interesting within their own right- however, it did become quickly unclear about how they might all link together.

The use of 'mind maps' would have been a great idea, had we known how to properly use them. Not only this but they weren't used consistently throughout each block.

The main issue was the confusion in the communication about the assessment as each lecturer seemingly provided different information/answers about the book proposal. If this course continues to run I believe that the structure should change whereby Eva's module on OCD should fall last, this is more simply so that at the end of the term when there are questions regarding the assessment we can get a resolute answer

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions. We will put these forward in the meeting.

Rosie

whilst i do agree with the comment saying people would understand if they went to classes, to an extent. I have to say, that out of the whole year, and all modules I have only missed two classes and I was still confused most of this term. I don't feel that all the assessments were explained well and often the assessment handbooks were contradicting or unfinished (theory and app still a draft copy with notes, Research and professional skills tells us we have to show wider reading but lectures go on to say it is incorrect). Furthermore when I have asked lectures about assessments i have often not got responses till after the deadline ( in one case i asked two and a half weeks before the deadline).

furthermore i think feedback has been really poor this year particularly for specialist essay a bullet point saying grammar check is not going to help me

I am sounding very negative here, so a few positives for me are the ACFI teaching i thought was very good and i enjoyed Psych well-being particularly first term. theory and app first term i found very interesting and the first term of research and professional skills

Okay, thank you for all of this info. James and I will relay it to staff in the meeting.

Rosie
