Challenges on Celie: Celie represents an African American girl who encounters traumatic experiences like physical and mental abuse, racism, and challenges with her own identity throughout the book.

Pivotal moments: Celie embracing freedom by leaving her abusive husband Mr., Celie's new belief of God being everything, Celie creating her own business, and Celie reuniting with her sister Nettie.

Celie before pivotal moments: Celie's first letter to God expressing her difficult youth by restating Papa's words being to tell "nobody but God" or she will undergo punishments by him. Therefore, Celie has been encourage at a very young age by her Papa to never speak about the things he would do to her. This later affected Celie in the future because she would obey her husband Mr. despite the brutal things he will do to her.

Celie after pivotal moments: Celie left Mr. after finding out the truth about her family through the letters Nettie would send her that M. would hide from Celie. As Celie and Shug were leaving, Celie finally confronted Mr. and said he will be "cursed" for all the abusive things he did to her. Therefore, Celie became a better version of herself where she learned to love her identity.

Nettie is also an important protagonist in The Color Purple

Challenges on Nettie: Despite being sisters, Nettie was the opposite of Celie. Nettie was a fighter and would encourage Celie to do the same. However, Nettie faces a challenge when Papa insist Celie is to be married with Mr. and soon Nettie will be left with no home.

Pivotal Moments: Nettie's letter to Celie, Nettie traveling with Samuel and Corrine, Nettie's new belief of God being similar to Celie and Shug despite being separated, Celie finding out the truth about Papa, and Nettie reuniting with Celie

Before pivotal moments: Nettie gets separated from her sister Celie by Mr. after refusing to sleep with him. Nettie is left with no choice but to search for a new home and write letters to Celie. However, Celie never receives any letters.

After pivotal moments: Nettie continues to write to Celie despite having no response from Celie. Therefore, Nettie represents the definition of sisterhood and everything she described in her letters to Celie to reunite with her.

Challenges: Mr. lost his first wife who was murdered by her lover. Mr. always had a thing for Shug Avery but because of his father, he married his first wife. He then faces the need to find a new wife which later is offered to have Celie. Therefore, Mr. expresses his anger through the abuse he causes on Celie.

Pivotal moments: Celie leaving Mr., Mr. reflects through everything he did to Celie, Mr. expresses his regrets, and Mr. and Celie reunite and have a healthy friendship together

Before pivotal moments: Mr. was abusive towards Celie and would make her feel ashamed of her own identity. Therefore, Mr. would take advantage of Celie's innocence.

After pivotal moments: Celie left Mr. for good which leads to Mr. reflecting for some time. Mr. learns and regrets from his past with Celie and develops into a better person. Therefore, Mr. is able to have a healthy friendship with Celie.

Impact on Celie: Shug Avery helped Celie explore a different side of her identity with love. Celie learned about her sexuality from Shug and was influenced by Shug's belief with God.

Sofia: Sofia is an African American woman who has the courage to fight against people who disrespect her. Despite the judgement and imprisonment she faces, Sofia was always known for her strength in a woman.

Impact on Celie: Sofia has a similar mindset to Celie's sister, Nettie. This put Celie to express her jealousy in Sofia being able to defend herself from injustice. With that, Sofia encourages Celie to fight anyone who mistreats her.

This symbolizes women's power and culture through their creativity in The Color Purple.

Belief in God

This is portrayed through Celie's belief being different from her past with God. Shug's influence on Celie with God symbolizes that God is greater than what they are described to be.

Celie opening up her own business. After she left her husband, Celie gained the opportunity to make her own business of selling jeans and representing individuality in women.

This quote said by Celie showcases love within one's flaws. Celie is able to acknowledge every challenge she faced with her identity and illustrates being able to love herself by continuing to live in this harsh society.
