2000

Tate Modern opens on Bankside. The London Eye opens at County Hall.

2001

Greater London Authority is set up under mayor Ken Livingstone. Major museums drop entrance charge.
2002

The Millennium Bridge opens again after its ­unsettling wobble is cured.

2003

A £5 congestion charge is imposed on cars entering central areas.

2004

Planning permission is granted for “The Shard”, which will be London’s tallest building at 1,016ft (310 metres) when ­completed.

2005

On 6 July London is chosen to stage 2012 Olympic Games. The following day bombs explode on three Tube trains and a bus, killing 52 people.

2007

The new Wembley Stadium opens. Eurostar terminal opens at St Pancras.

2008

The “credit crunch” – house prices crash and Northern Rock bank is nationalised.

2009

MPs’ expenses scandal rocks Parliament.

2011

Phone hacking scandal – the News of the World closes after 168 years, and senior Metropolitan policemen resign.

2012

London Olympics are held. Queen Elizabeth II’s ­Diamond Jubilee is ­celebrated.

 I had its own distinctive folk music forms, which flourished until the era of industrialisation when it began to be replaced by new forms of popular music, including music hall and brass bands. In surveys, 70 percent of British adults stated that they preferred to listen to pop music.

The British invasion, spearheaded by Liverpool band the Beatles, often regarded as the most influential band of all time, saw British rock bands become highly influential around the world in the 1960s and 1970s and the Rolling Stones, whom among other British musicians led rock and roll's transition into rock music. 

In addition to advancing the scope of rock music, British acts developed Avant-funk and neo-soul and created acid-jazz.

During most of the 1990s, , a period of increased pride in the UK culture, inspired by the 1960s swinging 60s, was coined due to the success of the girl band, the Spice Girls.

During the 21st century, blue-eyed soul came to be dominated by British singers, including Amy Winehouse, Duffy and most notably Adele, who has broken several sales and chart records.

 English singer Ed Sheeran was the foremost folk-orientated artist of the 2010s; he had the most combined success in the UK album and singles charts in the 2010s. London formed English-Irish pop boy band One direction were one of the biggest teen idols of the 2010s.Until the UK has had the music industry only growing with famous artists today.
