The first puritans, known as Pilgrims, had extremist Puritan views. They ran away from England in the early 17th century, landing in Plymouth in 1620. After signing the Mayflower Compact and establishing self-government, the Pilgrims struggled for years until more puritans came to the colony. This wave lasted from the 1630's to the 1640's, where less extremist puritans came over.

The colonists from the Old World inadvertently brought numerous diseases with them on their journey. These illnesses were misinterpreted by colonists, who believed it was a sign from god indicating their right to take the land for themselves. As tensions between Puritans and Natives increased, they soon escalated into a war known as the King Philip's War in 1675. After 14 months of heavy casualties between the colonists and the Wampanoags and their allies, the war ended in 1676.

Puritan society was theocratic, meaning the Church held most of the power. This was introduced by John Winthrop's 'City upon a Hill' speech, which described this society as close to god and charitable. Every settlement was built around a church, and the network connecting the settlements was based on the churches.

The Salem Witch Trials were a series of accusations in the 17th century. Settlers would accuse women of witchcraft, offering no fair trial and often killing the accused. The victims were primarily women who had independent lifestyles or widows, and, in one case, a man who didn't accuse/defend his wife. These trials are a testament to the patriarchal society, as fears of differing views ended up killing at least 20 people in Salem alone.
