I believe it is one of the most important aspects of life to be able to relate to others. Humans are social creatures by nature (no matter how much we say we hate people). When we are self-aware enough of the world around us and are able to recognize emotions in others, it becomes a great help to daily life.

To become aware of your own emotions and have the ability to control them is a great feat met by only some people in life. If we are aware of when we ourselves are letting emotions get the best of us, we have the ability to "reel it in". if one can take a step back and evaluate what is taking place in our minds, and causing other things to occur in our environment, then we have a better chance at thriving around others.
