the sky is the limit, because for example, the exploration of space represents the last frontier. Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the lunar surface, Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969. Astronauts went to the moon to collect lunar samples and bring them back to Earth. The USA won the race and outran the USSR. The first astronauts who landed on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The journey to the moon lasted 109 hours and they walked on the moon for 2,5 hours. They made this journey to impose their ideology and show the power of the USA. This mission was to go for the first time to the moon and also to do some research and testing with samples collected to advance science. So after this started the Space Race between USSR and USA during the Cold War. 
USA replied to  Kennedy’s speech to encourage Americans  to change ignorance into knowledge and an hope for the future. They launched 3 men onto the moon with the Apollo 11 mission. So they launched the astronauts Neil Amstrong, the one who walked on the moon, "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins  in 1969, because, for Americans Space was the "new frontier".
This mission was a milestone, an important event in the history which has been very mediatized, and  broadcast live on television and radio. 
The first goal was to win the space race and be the most powerful country, by showing their strength and technology.

In August 1955, the USSR responded to the US announcement that they intend to launch the first artificial satellite to go to  Space. 
In 1958, the USA entered the Space Race by launching Explorer 1, the first US satellite to reach orbit. 
In 1962, JFK gave a speech where he defined the Space race as the " greatest adventure of all the time". And his speech was a milestone because going to the Moon was one of the biggest challenges during this decade and also because the two superpowers  (USSR and USA) were in competition.

The space race was a conflict between the USA and the USSR, this conflict was called the Cold War. The space race started then.
The competition began when the Russians  placed an artificial satellite (Sputnik) into the Earth's orbit on October 4th 1957.
J.F Kennedy made  a speech about the space conquest in  1962. He accepted  an ambitious challenge, he wanted to be the first country to land on the moon, this speech was seen around the world on  the TV 
Apollo 11 was the culmination of a series of missions that allowed the development of necessary space techniques, spacecraft and a giant launcher as well as the reconnaissance of landing sites on the moon. This event was a milestone and highly mediatised. This was a decade of knowledge and discovery. The objective was to claim the power of the United states of America!
