One tax was the stamp act which required every colonist who bought newspapers, wills, licenses, and even playing cards to be stamped. Many petitions and boycotts were made to try to stop this from happening, as the colonists said " No taxation without representation!". This meant they were okay with taxes, not taxes that weren't documented in the colonial laws.

These acts were made to tax the colonist on their money and rights. For example, the Quartering act made it so that the colonial assembly had to provide British soldiers with housing which cost a ton of money and effort. Another example is the Townshend act which made it so that certain goods like glass, paint, paper, and tea were taxed. Many people boycotted this by not buying certain items or making their own.

Boston massacre and Boston tea party

Many of the boycotts and protests of the acts and taxes took some wrong turns, such as the Boston Massacre. Many angry colonists who did not like the new taxes started to insult and mock the British soldiers and their commander Thomas Preston, the words turned to snowballs, then to balls of ice, then became an assault of rocks. The commander instead of fleeing the area shot some of the protesters and in the aftermath of gunshots, 5 Bostonians were killed. As a result of this, the tea act was made to be a more strict rule on the colonies but the already enraged colonists angry about the massacre decided to boycott and rebel once again. On December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty dressed up as Mohawk Indians to get on a ship transporting tea. Once they snuck onto the ship they proceeded to dump 90,000s pounds of tea into the harbor as a protest to the acts of England.

Why was it written?

The declaration of Independence was written by the founding fathers of America mainly Thomas Jefferson. The reason they wrote this declaration was to show the colonies they do not need Britain to live. They wanted to show the world that the king has done unjust things and that we have a better life without him. They promote equality and the pursuit of happiness as something the colonies can provide on their own. It also protected the money and jobs of the people in the colonies. While some of these problems and statements can be debated to be false the point made was that they wrote all men are equal on paper for the first time in history.

What did the declaration do for america

Many people see the declaration as a heavily agreed-upon form of writing that saved America but really it was something else. For example on page 66 in Zinn it says " people chanted in the streets saying, Tyranny is Tyranny let it come from whom it may". This shows that the reality of the declaration was to get support for soldiers to help defeat England but also it wanted to protect the rich welfare of the colonies. It did not address all people and it also started many arguments and fights later on in American history. The declaration did work, it started the revolutionary war and it mainly affects the poor and colored people of America.
