I found the 7 tips to decrease stress video very helpful for me as a teacher and also for students. I think laughter is one of the most important, and not to always take ourselves so seriously, it is ok to make mistakes that is how we all learn. I think if students take time to enjoy nature, their own rituals and their pets they will decrease stress. Music always lifts one's spirit. The other resource was Edu Advisor. Article by Terence Lim. The tip I liked best was making a grateful list. This helps increase positive emotions. The tip of spending time with loved ones who make you feel good about yourself is very useful. Avoid others who bring you down. Janell

I believe stress management is essential for everyone but is hard to achieve sometimes. Some of the things I have found that work for me include deep breathing, any form of exercise, praying (or meditation), laughing, positive thinking, listening to music, keeping organized, eating right, getting enough sleep, spending time with friends and family, and writing down what I am grateful for so that I can visually focus on what's positive in my life and not dwell on any negatives, which might be out of my control anyway.

I teach a class called Health Promotion. I teach stress management techniques in the class. Most of them have been discussed by my peers posts. Another thing I use in my classroom are stress relievers in class. It helps to decrease stress and increase class participation and engagement. I have pipe cleaners, hard candy, fidget spinners, and squishy stress items. My students love them and I see less distractions, side conversations or "illegal" phone use with them. :)

Oddly enough, my wife just attended a seminar on stress management. As already noted, meditation and exercise were both touted as important activities to reduce stress. I would add that I believe (and there is some research on this) that having an engaging hobby - something that a person really gets into- is a very good way to manage stress. An engaging hobby, be it fishing, crochet, woodworking or reading (to name but a few) can get one's mind off of a stressful situation. It also provides the individual purpose, which I believe is something very important when managing a stressful world.

I make sure my students take a little breather before every exam. I have them just take a minute to put their head down, clear their thoughts and think of a happier moment they experienced. They seem to like this because it is simple and leaves them feeling positive energy before taking the exam. A lot of my students have test anxiety and doing this simple activity has really helped them get through the pre-exam jitters.
Megan

I find that taking a break from whatever is stressing me. For instance getting up and walking around the room or down the hall. Being able to step away for a moment allows me to redirect my energy and mind. Many people find yoga to be a way to distress. I personally enjoy running but I think finding any type of physical activity can help to redirect and de-stress.

During the three minute video we watched I was struck by how much laughter reduces stress. I purposely within each of my lessons do something that will hopefully bring laughter or at least a smile. It lightens the mood and helps the students be more comfortable as well as breaks up the monotony of longer classes. I usually teach a three hour class so it can get long. I try to add videos as it may pertain to the material or a story or have students share. I see these small "funny" moments also helps students retain the material we were working on as almost a pneumonic. Amy S.

I find it is important to bring awareness to the amount of stress our students encounter. Often I find that students don't even realize the stress they undertake just being a college student. Having students reflect on this is a technique that can help bring awareness and in turn lead to implementation of strategies to decrease the stress. Sharing with students ways to decrease stress is important and I feel is part of our job. Giving examples of ways to reduce and manage stress should include: staying positive, setting small achievable goals, avoiding procrastination, exercising, and doing something you enjoy to take a break from the stress of school and life.

Jenna Sorenson

I have similar techniques to many of those mentioned. I start all of my classes with an "agenda" slide on the PPT, and along with this is typically a humorous, appropriate meme. There are plenty good health care ones that coincide with content we are learning, but leading up to an exam I have ones related to studying, with the crummy weather, I have the references to "no spring." It's my hope that this "lightens" the mood for all the stress we face daily, and is often out of our control circle :)

I permit students to have input into the course. Each week I require they provide feedback as to the material presented and to my instruction, so it can all be improved. I also will vary my instructional methods to reach all styles of learning. It also helps to joke with the class, when appropriate.

Before my class starts I like to play music for the students. Often it relates to that days lecture/discussion or the the competency at large. As the music plays I go around and greet students by name and write an outline of the days lesson with all future due dates. I think this helps to ease students into the learning environment and create a community where they have a role.

I begin my Monday Labs in a relaxing "how was your weekend" kind of talking session. It really eases the students into their learning week, and it's amazing how much laughter there is! Laughter just diffuses stress! When stress of everyday does come up, I bring up a lot of the 7 tips to decrease stress. I remind them how important it is to take care of yourself, which means taking time for yourself. Everyone needs a little "time-away" every now and then!

I am still learning how to do this for my students but one thing I try to do is give students a verbal overview of the week's lesson and assignments to make sure they know what they have to do that week. I also give them a heads up about the next 2-3 weeks of class to make sure they know what to expect.

I often find that students stress stems from a lack of orgnaization. Therefore, I always suggest organizational tools, such as the Eisenhower Matrix (time management technique, Self-Journal (time management journal), or I show a business operations concept called 5s, which is simply a technique to help get and stay organized, minimizing any clutter.
