" 'You live in West Egg,' she remarked contemptuously" (26). Daisy reacts to Nick living in West Egg Village in a disrespectful, disdainful way, which implies that she views poorer places like West Egg as inferior (compared to where she lives, which is the richer East Egg). It also suggests Daisy values wealth.

(pg. 149)
Commentary: This quote gives readers insight into Daisy's character and personal values. In the story, just before this quote, Daisy crashes into Myrtle, killing her instantly. She allows everyone to believe that Jay was the one who killed Myrtle. She does not claim responsibility for her actions and proceeds to leave Gatsby, and does not even acknowledge his demise (which is her fault). This shows Daisy's credibility and tells us that she is a careless and selfish individual.

Throughout the book, it's hinted that Gatsby's great fortune does not truly come from where he says it does. Therefore, Gatsby uses logos, aka logic, to convince everyone that he built up his fortune, not otherwise. By telling them stories and providing small articles of importance from his "past", he deepens his lie.

Scott Fitzgerald's purpose in setting "The Great Gatsby" in the 1920s was to express his life, as a young man. Born in the 1890s this story expresses what his life was like during the exhilarating times of the 1920s. I believe that Scott is a mixture of Gatsby and Nick himself. Nick went to the army, so did Scott; while Gatsby was wealthy, successful, and well educated as was Scott. His purpose for doing this was to "retell" his life from the multiple different perspectives, like a movie being filmed with multiple cameras. Fitzgerald uses the rhetorical strategy, pathos, to strengthen his purpose. He does this by expressing each characters inner thoughts and feelings which adds to the emotional effect.
