What were his major contributions?

Freud studied more than the unconscious, he looked at how social life began and how it did not change across time nearly as much as people would expect (DuBois & Linethal, 2000).
A great deal of his work has been linked to how we view sexual abuse in children. Freud led the way in psychoanalysis, citing that children who claimed sexual abuse were likely fantasizing or had an Oedipus complex (McOmber, 1996). According to McOmber (1996), this work was the basis for his work in the unconscious that would shape his work on his own theory.
McOmber (1996) states that Freud developed the idea that finding the unconscious root of an idea or behavior could unlock the "hysteria" that plagued a patient and linked this to sexual traumas in childhood.
Freud is also known to have developed many theories as to the differences between men and women that exist on the subconscious level. According to Brody (1985), Freud and his work with psychoanalysis focused on the aspects of sexuality that are determined when we are children. These later develop into the characteristics that often divide and define gender for many people (Brody, 1985)
Thanks to Freud, we have an idea of what it is like to delve into the minds of those who are troubled, and we can use what we have learned from their past to work out how to best treat their issues. We have also learned that it is critical to evaluate how children could be traumatically affected in childhood. The final important contribution focuses on his work with abuse. While somewhat misguided, it developed the springboard for how we evaluate those who have been abused and how we tap into that information.
