Tanks were a revolutionary technology which were huge slow armored vehicles. The mark-1 only reached up to 4 mph, it was equipped with machine guns and canons, they were also lightly armored only having up to 12mm of armor, being able to get shot down by small arms. It was used on the front lines to be used as a portable ground defense and offense. Going forward in time, tanks had to be judged on 3 sections, firepower, mobility, and armor.

Living in the trenches was already horrendous, with the common threat of lice and shell shock. To add to that, rats were a huge problem too. According to the video, one pair of rats could produce 880 offspring yearly. This caused the trenches to be infested with rats, and the rats took advantage of that. They evolved to be the size of cats and could often be seen on dead bodies. Despite all of the adverse facts about rats, they also proved helpful in some cases. Large groups of rats would hear incoming attacks and run away, alerting the soldiers before they knew. The way that rats ate the war victims was horrible; they started at the eyes and worked their way through the mouth, and exiting near the liver.

Trench foot was an infection that was caused by cold, wet and unsanitary conditions. Since the men would stand for hours in terrible conditions their feet would go numb and turn red or blue. Back then the only treatment for trench foot was to dry your feet and change your socks. Men were on orders to change their socks every once in a while. By 1915 soldiers were acustumed to carrying three more pairs of socks with them. If not treated well trench foot could turn gangrenous (the tissue could die) and result in amputation.

Poison gas was first used in 1915 by the Germans. At first they used cylinders and wind, and later the gas would be launched in artillery shells. The gas attacked the respiratory system and caused burning sensations. People choked and died as a result of suffocation. It also caused blistering skin, vomiting, sore eyes, internal and external bleeding. Death could be as quick as in a day and take up to 5 weeks. 79,000 soldiers died during the war as a result of poison gas and millions were affected by it.

Machine guns were known throughout WWI and turned out to be a global symbol of the war later on. These guns could shoot around 500-600 rounds per minute. Older models were heavy, multi-part guns that needed teams of 4-8 to work and assemble, newer models needed only a few to set up and they became a lot more sleek and mobile. These machines killed upwards of 85% of soldiers during the war.

The Submarine was used by the Germans to be able to strike the British Navy. The British "owned" the seas so the German's used submarines to rule below the surface. An issue with the Submarines were that sometimes the Germans couldn't tell who the boat belonged to. This caused the sinking of many ships who weren't the enemy. The Germans also called the submarines U-boats short for Underseeboot because they were quite literally under the sea. At the end of the war the Germans had built 334 U-boats and 226 under construction.

If a soldier operating one was caught by the British, they were immediately executed, instead of being captured.
