Repetitiveness is so necessary for living according to Ratliff, everyone wants a house, a nice car, and some money. Ratliff says music doesn't have to be symmetrical. Therefore music can have all types of different sounds and different. People like rhythm in a song so a lot of music is repetitive. Artists aspire to make their music unpredictable so that people don't thing there music is too obvious.

We love to have music help us with repetitive motion, because there is so much repetitive motion necessary for living. It gets things done. We go to work, we chop the onions, we wash the clothes, we pay the bills, we make the deadlines. Repetitive motion brings us to the end of the work, one motion at a time.

But music doesn’t have to be set at right angles. It does not have to be square or symmetrical or neatly sequential. There are other shapes and motions a musician or band or composer can make to achieve the condition of music, or what the composer Edgard Varèse called “organized sound.”
