#1) In Henry David Thoreau's essay "Civil Disobedience," he says, "A minority is powerless while it conforms to the majority."#2) In this quote, Thoreau sets up a contrast between minority and majority. His use of vague terminology means he could be referring to any social grouping: race, class, ideology, gender, etc. In this way, he reaches reaches marginalized groups beyond the scope of his initial audience. #3) This quote relates to the Transcendentalist belief that to conform is to lose yourself. If the minority conforms to the majority, it loses those characteristics which make it unique. If everyone choses to conform, there will be no minority. Everyone will be the same, and there will be no individualism in the world. #4) Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" relates to the contemporary work of the rapper Logic. In his song, "Confession," he raps, "I'd rather be a man in a different world, than work for the man in my universe." His words relate to being true to himself, and to not letting "the man" get in the way of that. He also speaks up for minorities, drawing attention to the systemic racism that still plagues society. In this quote, Thoreau sets up a contrast between minority and majority. His use of vague terminology means he could be referring to any social grouping: race, class, ideology, gender, etc. In this way, he reaches reaches marginalized groups beyond the scope of his initial audience.

#1) In his essay, “Nature,” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.” #2) His use of synecdoche, using “the attentive eye” to refer to the observing person, emphasizes the idea of human sight as something almost divine. Our eyes have the power to perceive nature’s wonders. He connects the idea of nature and the passage of time by describing the passage of seasons as a series of still images, each “picture” something new and never before seen by the “attentive eye.” His subtle use of personification suggests that the field itself is the provider, the “beholder,” of these marvelous and ever changing images. #3) This relates to the Transcendentalist idea that nature is sacred. Emerson’s excerpt recalls a line from the 1995 Disney movie Pocahontas. In the song, “Just Around the Riverbend,” Pocahontas sings, “What I love most about rivers is you can’t step in the same river twice. The water’s always changing always flowing.” This line captures the same idea that nature is always changing, and if we blink an eye, we might just miss its most beautiful moment. #4) This advice translates to modern day and the trend toward intentional gratitude. Life in 2019 can be stressful and overwhelming. Steeped in the craziness of the modern world, it can be easy to miss life’s wonders. Gratitude trends like Instagram’s #100happydays challenge help 21st century teens and young adults refocus their priorities through daily gratitude posts. This challenge helps participants recognize that even the ordinary day brings something beautiful and post-worthy. In Emerson’s words, “every hour [holds] a picture which was never seen before.” There is always something new to inspire us, something new to gram with gratitude.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Nature" he states," Build therefore your own world." He uses the word "build" to describe the thought of creating your own future or reality. He also uses the phrase "Your own world" implying that this is your reality and it's what you see in the environment around you. This relates to transcendentalism because transcendentalist believe that everyone has equal knowledge of themselves and should transcend above the world around them. Eminem is a modern day representation of this idea because in his song "Lose Yourself" he states, "If you had one shot, one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment would you capture it or just let it slip?" in this lyric he is implying that he built himself his own world in the rap culture and if he can do it anybody can do it if they try.

In Emerson's essay "self reliance" he says, " There is a time in every mans education hen he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide..." In this quote by Emerson he believes trying to be like someone else is not good for you. That camouflaging into a crowd is unhealthy and its better to be unique and yourself than trying to mold into someone else's shape. Melanie Martinez also expresses this in her song "Potato Head", in the song she states "What a waste when little girls grow into their mothers face but little girls are learning how to cut and paste, and pucker up their lips until they suffocate." This quote is a representation of what is going on in 2019. In 2019 you often see people who were beautiful just the way they are but were easily influenced by social media or the unrealistic or false definition of "perfect" or "beauty". Bot Emerson and Melanie tie together with the belief that you are wasting who you are by trying to imitate someone else. Even though Emerson and Melanie represent different times they express a similar problem of how people try to change them self to fit in a crowd, which would be foolish.

In Emerson's essay "Self Reliance" he says, "Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood. Is it so bad, than to be misunderstood? Pythogoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh." He uses this to suggest that people are being looked at as if what they believe in is not right, that they should be the same as everyone else. Those who say its not right to believe in what they do not understand what someones beliefs are. This relates to the Transcend because it shows that not everyone is the same. That not everyone will be able to understand those who do things different. This idea translates to the contemporary example of how people don't always like how others are in the world so they push them away from what everyone else is doing.

Zane Joseph P.1 The essay “self-reliance" by ralph waldo Emerson he says “the civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet.” I think this quote explains much of the modern world. Humans used to be ones that lived with the land and only took what they needed and gave back what was wanted. Humanity today has lost its touch with reality and the universe. We are to worried about ourselves and worried about things that are inconsequential. humans have evolved in such a way that we no longer think about ourselves. Human mortality would be much higher if we learned to be one with ourselves. A wonderful thing people could learn from is “maslow's hierarchy of needs” there are many tools to help bring us back to a calm state. Not everyone will understand how this quote matches the world today but in order to realize what's wrong you first have to fix what you have done wrong.

In his essay “Self-Reliance” Ralph Waldo Emerson said “...that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide...” The syntax he uses in this quote is very powerful and has a huge impact to a reader because of his use of the metaphor by comparing something regular as envy and imitation to something taboo as suicide and ignorance. When he compares envy to ignorance, he is almost stating that if you are jealous of someone else or even wish to be them, then you are a fool. Also, when he compares copying someone to suicide, he is saying that if you are not your own person than you are already dead. When he uses the metaphor like this it appeals to pathos, which almost frightens the reader. It might even frighten the reader into being your own self. This idea is part of Self-Reliance in Transcendentalism. This in modern day times is like a fan copying their favorite idol. For example, many young women in the United Sates strive to be like the Kardashians. The Kardashian is a popular tv show with beautiful women who modified their body to be in their perfect image. Thousands of women saw this and started to envy them, so after envying they started to change their bodies, the way they think, and the way they act to be more like the Kardashian. A woman named Jennifer Pamplona, 25, from Sao Paolo spent over Five hundred thousand dollars to be like Kim Kardashian who is special and unique. All the wonderful things Jennifer could have used her money, her idea, her time, and herself as a person for is now gone. Jennifer Pamplona is no longer herself, she is just another Kim Kardashian among the many. Just another Kim Kardashian nothing seems special about that.

In Emerson essay "Self- Reliance" he say's "What I Must Do Is All That Concerns Me, Not What The People Think". By Saying This Emerson Means Doing Something You As A Person Enjoy Not Something Everyone Else Feel You Should Be Doing In Life. Through His Use Of Words He Conveys A Deep Message. His Words Suggest's To Do Something Even If The Whole World Is Doing Another Task, Be Yourself. This Relates To The Transcendentalist Belief That Individualism Should Be Shown More Often. Jcole Is A Modern Day Representation Of This Idea. He Constantly Shows He Is A Unique Individual Through His Music. " I can't sleep cause I'm paranoid
Black in a white man territory
Cops bust in with the army guns
No evidence of the harm we done
Just a couple neighbors that assume we slang
Only time they see us we be on the news, in chains" This Quote Shows That Most People Already Have An Idea Of Who You Are, But They Never Let You Show Your Individualism.

Through his use of diction he conveys that the thought that the mind is holy. This relates to the Transcendentalist belief in individualism and independence. I experienced this idea in my life I went into solitude, this solitude gave me time to realize the unique aspects on myself. For me it was art, I wouldn't use colors I would just shade everything. It also gives you a chance to look at reality in a different perspective to.

In Emerson's essay "Self Reliance" he states "[...] No kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on the plot of ground which is given to till." the allusion to a farmer in his field tending to his own crop by himself really puts and image in your mind of what Emerson wants out of the individuals. He wants the individual to do everything by them self. thus the title. but he doesn't realize that his later metaphor about society being a "Joint stock company whom only caters to the shareholders." and how we "surrender our liberty" to them when we invest in society is a contradiction to his earlier quote about the farm. Stating that investing in this joint stock makes you a slave of some sort but that "farming" our grain isn't a form a slavery is a fallacy if anything. You are just enslaving yourself to the soil if anything. In a modern day of anti government sentiments and anarchist groups much like transcendentalist they all have a common goal. to "liberate themselves from the evil bonds that is government oppression. Think about in a whole, Modern liberalism and Social Justice And ANTIFA. Being on the outside looking in you can see that these extremist groups are anti government and would do away with it in a heartbeat. They see it unnecessary but you see how they wish to gain these goals. its not civil disobedience. its violence and war. not saying that transcendentalist are terrorist im just merely stating a glaring similarity and how it may have shaped opinions today. i understand that this ideal is euphoric to some i simply can not align myself with such ideals

In his essay, "Self-reliance", Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Be yourself; no base imitator of another, but your best self. There is something which you can do better than another. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great, not what you were never made for." By saying "Be yourself" he implies that be who you are and not anyone else, do what makes you happy. Do the things you are good at and interested in.Don't mind what others think and says, don't let their opinion get in your way. This relates to transcendentalist idea that being nonconformist is to gain yourself. Emerson want to say that be who we are, not who the world wants us to be. An representation example of this belief is "I don't care what they're going to say. Let the storm rage on the cold never bothered me any way." This is one of the remarkable line in 2014 Disney movie "Frozen", this line line was said by Elsa. In this scene she want to conquer the hatred that she feel. She want be who she wants to be. I can relate this quote because sometimes I'm scared to show myself to other, I'm scared on what other may thinks about me but know I can show who I am without thinking others opinion.

In Ralph Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance," he says, "What I must do, is all that concerns me, not what the people think." I believe this means that we need to do what pleases us and not others. As we get caught up in what others think of us. We always tend to please others before ourselves that leads us being miserable within ourselves and wishing we did things differently. He wanted to tell us not to worry about what others think, because all that's really matters is what you think and our own independent actions. This relates to transcendentalist idea the value of making ourselves comfortable as god wants us to love ourselves as we always spend too much time worrying about unworthy things. I believe this quote is important in today's generation. As life has its ups and down, we should remember to what is best for us, as it would make life easier. As today, we often get caught up into other emotions when trying to make a decision that affects us. We should always listen to our hearts and what is really matter to us. Nadine lustre (Filipina celebrity) is a modern-day representation of this quote because she doesn’t mind what others will think of her, she ignores every negative opinion and continue to do whatever she likes to do, she says “you are who/what you say you are.”

"What i must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think.". (Self Reliance and other essays-Emerson)In the quote he uses the phrase "the people" as a majority, which is a strong transcendentalist ideal. The allusion to society is strong due to the anti establishment mindset of transcendentalist and other non conformist. This connects well with the text and quote because transcendentalist believe in rely on yourself and only yourself, doing what you think is right and not worrying about the majority of people and what they think is right. Be yourself because that's who you are meant to be, and do what you think is right and not "what the people think". Today in society many can be pressured to go with the mainstream instead of being themselves, this is seen in High schools, buying expensive clothes or dressing a certain way rather than being yourself. Some people are too afraid to be themselves fearing of being outcasts and instead conform with the majority. " Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are."-Cobain

In Emerson's essay, "Self-Reliance (And other Essays)," he says, "What I must do, is all that concerns me, not what the people think." Through this quote, he conveys the importance of focusing on your own needs and concerns and not focusing on what outsiders may think. This quote uses a lot of first-person pronouns to emphasize this. This relates best to the Transcendentalist belief in Individualism, or in other words, independence or self-reliance. People should be themselves and be able to take care of themselves and should not conform to the standards of society. This concept translates to the contemporary example of Frank Sinatra's song "My Way." The song talks about all of the paths that the singer has taken and all of the mistakes that he has made, and what matters most is that he was the one to make these decisions without outside influences. Through the singer's perspective, he sees his choices as necessary and he was able to pursue them without hesitation ("Regrets, I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption."). The song really emphasizes the importance of identity and the ability to speak what you believe in.

In Emerson's essay "Self Reliance," he states, "There comes a time in every mans education when he comes to the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide..." He uses this quote to convey ideas of Self Reliance and Self Expression by making the point that when one tries to conform to society, they lose themselves, which is essentially suicide of their individuality. This is important because it represent the main ideal of Transcendentalism, Individuality and relying on ones own self. This relates to today's society in which people are constantly under pressure to conform to society's standards, from beauty to occupations. Social Media spreads this much further, creating a much bigger issue. Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) is a modern day representation of this quote, as he continues to branch out himself from the standards of rap music, he creates his own unique songs and represents transcendental ideas in these songs. He refuses to conform despite societal pressures, and this is one of the main reasons hes so universally liked within the music community.

His uses the term nonconformist which means 'a person whose behavior or views do not conform to prevailing ideas or practices.' and this is a big part of self reliance because to have true self reliance you cannot conform to the ideas, beliefs, and any topic that can conform you to a group. The perfect example i have is malala yousafzai. A girl who start the education for Pakistani girls and women even though their belief is for girls and women to not learn and not even try to read or write and to do so could be punished by death or torture.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson's story 'Self Reliance" he says "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members." His use of saying everyone is against each other suggest he never really had trust with anyone or maybe grew up with nobody trusting each other by saying this he shows that he doesn't believe man trust in another and doesn't love each other. When Wiz Khalifa said "Be who you are and let everyone love that person." To me he is saying he will trust nor love anybody till they first love and trust him. But till someone does he will always relate to what Emerson said that everyone is against each other.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self Reliance" he says "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance." In the quote he uses a very strong metaphor relating envy to ignorance, saying that the want of something someone has is a lack of knowledge, his diction using envy and ignorance whereas in this day and age most people envy someone or someones belongings, it can very strongly relate to today's generations. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that you should be self-reliant and only rely on you and your belongings and not want somebody's belongings or features. This idea relates to The Lion King's character Scar when he finds out that the child Simba would be king and not him, he became envious and killed his brother and blamed it on Simba and made him flee the kingdom for him to become the next king, the way this works in ignorance is he also believes that Simba is dead after the incident.

Yeah, it's cold, but I like that
What, am I trapped?
Heart's beating out of my chest
Door's locked, but the keys are in my hands
Hm, yeah, that's weird, it doesn't make sense, does it?
I make songs, I don't make friends, judge me
Might smile, but it ain't that funny
Sing along to the pain, they love it
Life's like a merry-go-round
And I'm still tryna figure it out
I like space I don't fit in the crowds
My whole life I've been airin' it out
Oh, I'm gettin' into character now
Feels wrong, but it feels right
My feelings seal tight real nice
But I will fight anything to win
But I'm not Mike Tyson, I won't bite ya'
But I will tell you if I don't like you

Jax Johnson (Jacob Newlin) 4th Prd // NF "Therapy Session" and how it relates to Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance."

In Emerson's essay, "Self-Reliance", he states, "What I must do, is all that concerns me, not what other people think." This is basically saying that we should be living our lives the way we want too on the daily, and not living the way someone else wants us to live. We should be doing what makes us happy, whether that be changing our appearance to what we want it to be or chasing our wildest dreams. We shouldn't be letting someone else put a hindrance on that, we should ignore the haters and move on - do what our heart desires even if it's something as stupid as chasing a girl.

In NF's song, "Therapy Session.", he relates to this quote by saying, "
-My music is violent, you gotta be kidding me
-I guess that your definition of violence and mine
Is something that we look at differently
-How do you picture me ah?
Want me to smile, you want me to laugh
-You want me to walk in the stage with a smile on my face
When I'm mad and put on a mask, for real though
-I mean, what you expect from me?
I'm tryna do this respectfully
They say that life is a race
I know my problems'll probably catch up eventually."
He's basically saying that, his fans want him to smile when he is mad and put on a fake face just for their enjoyment but that isn't what he is going to do, because it's his own decision and he wants to express what he's feeling now what they want him to be feeling. He knows his problems will catch up with him eventually in life but at this moment it doesn't matter, he wants to live the way he sees his life going.

In a couple other of NF's songs he states that he's holding the keys to his life, he's scared to let people in because they will change him for the worst.

In NF's song, "Outcast", he states, "I'm gettin' sick of people tellin' me to smile more." Which directly relates to his other song, "Therapy Session." Because, again, his fans are wanting him to smile and put on a fake face, but that isn't him, he is real, he wants his fans to know that the face he has on is what he's' feeling at that moment.

He wears a fake, joker-esk smile now, with a frown, to show that he is really feeling emotions, he is different than other people and this is who he is, a guy from Michigan, his mother died from an overdose of pills and his father was abusive, an alcoholic who really didn't seem to care about him and even though, he is now married and happy, he isn't fully happy, still suffering from emotional pain from the abuse he suffered in his past as well as depression and probably countless other things he has yet to tell his fans.

I suggest going and listening to the song, "Therapy Session" for a better understanding of his mindset when he is rapping.
-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgMzxQW2raE
-
(This version is unblocked at school)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXuHSRHtXW4
-

Its just a part of being a great being, people will not understand you or the great things you say. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that not caring what society thinks or says about you and staying true to yourself even if you are misunderstood. I experience this in my life anytime i think or learn about the Bible or mostly God. In my life he is the greatest being and many times and almost all the time he is misunderstood or misinterpreted. He is great and almost always misunderstood or doubted.

In Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance”, he says, “Imitation is suicide.” He uses a metaphor to suggest that to imitate other people is the equivalent of suicide. By saying that imitation is suicide, he implies that acting like other people and taking on their personality is ripping away your individuality. Through his use of metaphors, he conveys the message that by copying someone else’s traits you turn yourself into a copy of that person. This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that being yourself is the best thing you can do. This idea translates to the contemporary example of society trying to make people conform to their standards of what is acceptable and what’s not acceptable. Internet trends and imitating a celebrities' lifestyle is a modern-day example of imitation. It’s easy to see how many people are falling into society’s “plan” because not a lot of people are comfortable with who they are. They don’t want to be themselves because they don’t think they’re good enough and because of that feeling, they imitate other people and their lifestyles to make themselves feel worthy enough to belong in our society. For example, on Instagram, there are pictures of desirable things such as a perfect body or a very nice house. These images usually make people feel bad about themselves and question themselves which causes them to try and change who they are. When people do that, they think it’s a good thing when it’s really them conforming to society’s standards on what’s acceptable. It’s a dark stormy cloud disguised as a beautiful rainbow, because they think they are fixing themselves when they’re really killing their individuality.

He uses feeling or body's to suggest that its an inner feeling or deeper understanding to it. Through his use of words he conveys that people are surrounded by a spiritual connection that people have with them. His repetition of the word "Our" suggests that its not only one person but many. This relates to Transcendentalist belief that people have a connection to something spiritual, bodily, or feeling. I experienced this in my own life when i went to DNOW at church ( you go stay the night at someone house with a group of girls,or guys depending on gender, and its basically like a study group for a whole weekend and there are some other fun activity's) I was with a group of girls that came from different churches. By saying "conforms to majority" he implies that how the world is today, minority is powerless because there is a image the world is making and people change themselves for that specific image. This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that individuals themselves have hard times being themselves because themselves are not who the world conveys them to be. Drake is a modern day representation of this idea through his song "Is There More". He states in his song: "I would rather lose my leg than lose their respect. But that'll never happen the way I'm watchin' my step. That ain't what I'm 'bout. I'm in control of my destiny, never in doubt. If I can't make it with you, I'll make it without." This quote states that even though the minority is powerless, many choose not to conform to the majority and be themselves.

Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary." Through his use of imagery he conveys difficulties i think that he is saying keep your spirits up and you will be able to deal with anything. So i think transcendentalist believe because of nature you can deal with anything you can keep your spirits up. Through out my life my parents always told me in bad times just smile and you can fool your heart into thinking everything is ok

In Emerson’s essay, ‘self-reliance’, he says “envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide” he is basically saying that if you’re jealous of someone you are losing your own knowledge of reality and you are turning into a lifeless person and that helps him bring in “imitation is suicide” by basically saying because you are jealous of someone you’ll try to achieve what they have and you will slowly turn yourself into them which is killing yourself. This translates to today with Katy Perry when she sings ‘Firework.’ She talks a lot about embracing individuality. She is singing about how all you need is yourself and how you don’t need others to show you who you are but saying “show them what you’re worth” and “you’re original and can’t be replaced.” shes saying you are the only you that there is no one else can be you and you cannot be anyone else.

He uses this quote as a metaphor to show that as people build technology and objects to help the common man in his daily life we lose the ability to do the things these objects do manually. This relates to transcendentalist beliefs of self reliance by not having to use these objects made by other people and instead relying solely on oneself.

In Thoreau’s essay, “Walden”, he says, “Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.” By his use of parallel structure, “rather than love, than money, than fame”, it emphasizes how much he desires truth over the materialistic and superficial ideas like love, money and fame. This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that truth transcends what people can know by means of the five senses. This idea translates to the contemporary example of John Lennon’s 1971 song “Gimme Some Truth”. This song shares the transcendentalist belief relevant to Thoreau’s quote on how truth is so desirable, and all-knowing.

In his essay, “Nature”, Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” His use of words like Integrity, and sacred is used to catch the readers eye. It almost reminds me of when I see someone that I am not used to seeing swear, swear. It is being used to imply assertiveness and to catch your eye. This quote relates the transcendtalist belief that the only thing right is your opinion. No one can change what you think. The only thing that matter is what you believe. Eminem is a modern-day example of this idea. He was the first white rapper that made an impact and changed people's views on who can rap and who can't. I’m sure people told him he couldn’t rap, or he couldn’t do this or that, but he did, and he believed in himself when no one else did.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay, "Self reliance" he says, "Be yourself; no base imitator of another but your best self. There is something which you can do better than another. Listen to the inward voice and bravely obey that. Do the things at which you are great, not what you were never made for."
He uses the word "Be yourself" to suggest how to learn by your own like it doesn't matter what other people gonna say but do what you know, what you have, and focus on what you were doing.
By saying "Do the things at which you are great, not you were never made for" he implies to be brave. Use what you know and don't think about what other people talking bad things about you.
Through his use of "There is something which you can do better than another" he conveys like his trying you to look up of yourself because "YOU ARE BETTER" be who you are, do what you want, and don't mind or care others businesses. Because we the people, its our nature to have our individual knowledge. God created us equal like we're all from God's creation.
His repetition of the words "you" and "another" is kind of like he suggests that believe in yourself don't let other people provoke or let you down because you matter! and it's your life.
This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that being independent in some other ways is such a good personality because they don't based in the help of other people but trying to do things by their own then.
This idea translates to the contemporary example of Transcendentalist because we have faith that people are at their very best when "self reliant" and independent. It is only from such real individuals that true community can form.
I connected this to Diana Ross' song that saying "Oh no, not I, I will survive Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive I will survive hey, hey" because it is a modern day representation of this idea.
I experience this idea when I feel like no one loves me anymore but only me, myself, and I can loved the way I wanted to be love. Its like I've been learned to love my own just to lessen the pain if I got hurt or broke like now I'm not depending my happiness by other people because we all know that if people leave we all get hurt.

In his essay, "Walden," Henry David Thoreau said, "Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth." He is using the examples of love, money and fame to illustrate that those are the materialistic things that society wants, but he uses truth because he wants what matters to him, what is true to him. This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that, truth and values transcends society and materialistic things. Also this also ties into the Transcendentalist belief that, rather than changing to fit society and chasing fame and possessions, stay true to yourself and chase what really matters to you, whether it is upholding a higher standard, helping the needy, or just being alone with nature. Do not conform to society and seek wealth or fame just because your neighbor seeks it. This idea translates to the contemporary example of helping someone in need. It is an awesome thing and is very encouraging to help someone in need just because you want to be a better person or help that person out of whatever they are in, but the second that you go bragging abut it or posting it to social media, you are not doing it to be a better person or actually help that person out, you are not staying true to yourself or values, you are seeking fame, recognition, and reward.

Our bones and muscles has the power to walk. He connects the idea of government and that he is a civilized man. Emerson's subtle use of metaphor suggest that him having a provider, the "strength" of this man that can't use his bones or muscles. This relates to the transcendentalist idea that government is strong. Emerson's excerpt recalls a movie " Iron Man" when he loses his suit and that he is very weak, without it. This quote could be saying that a man built something to ride on and now no longer need to walk anywhere. I think Emerson was trying to say that people have built so much to help them they have lost the use of their simple tool like their feet or hands. This is connected to transcendentalism because people have lost a real connection with the simple thing and the use of their sample tools. People have lost their connection to nature. This quote relates to today cause people always have their face in their phone. They are snapping picture of nature instead of sitting back a enjoying nature. People use their GPS just to find a school or the store. People are lost in their elections a are missing out on the real beauty of nature.

In Thoreau’s essay, Walden he says,” Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” He uses the phrase “Live in each season as it passes” to suggest the idea of living in the moment, in the right now not the past or the future. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that one should live for them self in the moment not for the others. Avicii is a modern-day example of this, in his song “The Nights” he says, “one day my father he told me, son, don't let it slip away.” By saying “don’t let it slip away” he conveys living in the moment for one's self not for others. Such as Thoreau, Avicii projects the idea of living in the moment but in his own more modern way.

His use of “... not what people think...” suggests that he does not want anyone to think for him that he can think for himself. This relates to the Transcendentalist tenet of self-reliance. A modern-day representation of this belief is in Jimmy Buffets song “Fruit Cakes” where he says “I don’t want that much organization in my life! I don’t want others thinking for me!". This quote perfectly correlates to to the ideas of Emmerson and the ideas of working for yourself and free thinking.

By saying that technology evolves making us weak he implies that it is not beneficial in the long term. This relates to the transcendentalist beliefs by not wanting to adapt to the new technology and it is holding back the full potential of being self-reliant without newer advances. The song “R.i.p.c.d, by Flatbush Zombies” is related to this because he says that new computer chips won’t let him play his CDs he made in the past. I experienced this in my life when trying to relate the usage of technology when making music myself where you used to be able to burn cds it is now digital leaving behind classic record players and other physical disks

He uses wearisome to suggest that being around people makes him feel tired and bored. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that by being alone you focus more on whats important.

In Emerson's essay “ self-reliance “, he says , to be great is to be misunderstood.” he uses this wording to suggest even if other people can’t understand your ideas the can still be amazing. It’s also saying not every human being thinks alike but that make no one person any less of a man or woman than the person next to them. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that a person should be themselves rather than conform to society's standards and think the way society wants you too. I experienced this idea in my life when I discovered Ryan Upchurch. Commonly known as Upchurch the redneck he started off as nothing but a misunderstood boy with a dream. He wasn’t completely misunderstood for his dream but for quitting his job to chase something that seemed uncatchable. He was also misunderstood by a lot of rappers because he was a different kind of rapper. Upchurch raped about life in the woods not life in the hoods. He was told many times he would be nothing and or would never make it. But now he is known as the king of country rap. He started off with nothing as nothing with a dream no one understood to cow coming out on top with fans behind him backing him up. There is also a song called Mr. Misunderstood, that ties almost to the transcendentalist idea. In the song it states “Mr. Misunderstood I understand” which states almost like all you misunderstood people I get you, I get that you're going to be something great one day so keep being yourself and doing things your way. Because they know that one day people will be able to understand all the work you put in that seemed pointless in the beginning it was all put together as a big picture but no one else could see it until it was done.

This relates to the Transcendentalist belief that you shouldn’t overly rely on others and that you should do things for yourself. Iron Man is a modern-day representation of this idea. The reason he’s a good representation is because he very rarely needs help from others. Instead of asking for help, he relies on his own strength and abilities to help protect the world.

In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay Nature he says, “To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty and, in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before and which shall never be seen again again .” he uses metaphor to convey the importance of a single moment and how it can drastically change. By saying,” to the attentive eye” he suggests that only a specific type of people understand the importance or the moment and that otherwise it can be easily overlooked. This relates to the transcendentalist belief that one should live his life to the fullest or live every moment as if its your last. This idea is constantly translated to arts, music, and literature. The painting “white Haron” by Alayna Gardner is a good example of a modern-day representation of this idea because it is painted to represent the artist view of a single moment in time a view that no one else could see. So instead of just enjoying the moment the artist decided to take advantage of it and paint it so that anyone could experience that rare sight.

This is shown to the beginning lines of applause by Lady Gaga “I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong to crash the critic saying, ‘is it right or is it wrong?’” which parallels to not caring what the “critics” say is “right” or “wrong” and just doing what makes you who you are. Those things only have the meanings that society give to them. And not everyone in the world has those things, but everyone does have the truth. This relates to transcendentalist belief that, you should distance yourself from society and become closer to nature. Because nature cannot lie to you. Nature is the truth. Only society can lie to you. Ian Somerhalder is a modern-day representation of this idea.

In his essay,” Self-Reliance,” Ralph Wando Emerson said, “There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that is imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no good kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given him to till.” His use of synecdoche, using the “That he must take himself better, for worse, as his portion.” to refer that a person needs to pay attention to one’s self more often. Our thoughts of ourselves have power to keep ourselves up and happy. He connects the idea “Self-Reliance” and the feeling of goodness about yourself. Each person has a good thing about them. Emerson’s subtle personification suggests that the field its self is the provider. This relates to transcendentalist idea that respecting yourself is good for yourself and others around you. The song “respect yourself” by Madonna is an example song for respecting yourself.
