Two of the referred songs are from 1967 and 1970. The social movement these songs were part of, is the Civil Rights Movement. Prior to the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans were treated as barely a human being, and were enslaved. Ahmadinejad’s opponent, Hossein Moussavi, had broad support across Iranian society and had vowed to loosen some of the controls—for example, on freedom of expression and the rights of women—of the current regime. Some nicknamed the protests the “Twitter Revolution” because the protestors relied on social networking sites (and Twitter in particular) to communicate with each other and with the outside world during the weeks-long protests.

This impacted me because every hum being should be equal and treated equally. “Oh freedom, oh freedom, oh freedom over me And before I’d be a slave I’ll be buried in my grave And go home to my Lord and be free” (Oh Freedom on Page 23) This quote from the song shows how bad it was to be an African American back then. There were no equal rights and many slaves ran away because of how bad the torture was.

The source claims that when Hossien was up for the job, he promised that he would “loosen” some of the serve controls held on the people. For example, controls on their freedom of expression, and controls upon women and their rights. However, because the election votes were rigged, he wasn’t elected. Thus, the people were angered and wanted to make things right.
