Article over national survey on drug use and health.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK524970/#ch2.s6
Summary:
There are many type of addictions from technology to physical substance abuse. According to "2015 National Survey on Drug use and Health: Summary of the effects of the 2015 NSDUH Questionnaire Redesign: Implications for Data Users [Internet]", misuse of prescription drugs may be under-reported for 2015 because the new prescription drug questions do not focus on details of lifetime misuse. Meaning that there could hundreds to thousands more people misusing than we know. In 2015 the focus of the prescription drug questions was changed to a 12-month reference period instead of the lifetime reference period that was used in prior NSDUH questionnaires. Now the lifetime use of any illicit drug even though lifetime prescription drug misuse will not be reported because any illicit drug use is dominated by marijuana. Future research will be conducted on illicit drug abuse as time progresses and addiction specialists are able to compare present results to 2015.

Whales and Dolphins in Captivity

Keeping animals in captivity for reasons other than rehabilitation or protection is often seen as cruel. The Humane Society writes about how whales and dolphins need the ocean to live a full and healthy life. Whales and dolphins live in groups called "pods". These pods are often similar to having family bonds with one another and can last years, sometimes a lifetime. These oceanic mammals are used to swimming for miles on end for either hours or days and can retrace their way back if needed. Whales and dolphins can dive down for several meters and stay underwater for up to half an hour; they rarely spend more time than is needed up at the surface. Keeping these animals in captivity is worthy of a heavy crime. Capturing these animals causing so much trauma and stress that it can lead to fatal consequences. For dolphins it can even break their trust between the human and the animal because during these events they often only go up to the boat to play. Tanks only allow them a very limited amount of space and keep them near the surface of the water which is something they aren't made for. The amount of stress and space they have can cause skin problems and "dorsal fin collapse". Whales and dolphins are magnificent creatures that aren't meant to be seen through a glass window or entertainment shows like Sea World. The greatest thing we can do is keep their natural homes clean and protected while watching from afar.
The article states, "They are highly intelligent. They live in complex societies. But they are taken from their homes, separated from their families and confined for human ‘entertainment." These facts show how they are being forced, & trapped. They deserve to be out in the open, free. Just like people would be. If a person were trapped in some sort of zoo with little to no space, wouldn't it be seen as some sort of cruel punishment? They have complex thoughts and ways of living just like humans do. The articles goes on to say, "In the wild, whales and dolphins live in large groups (called pods), often in tight family units. Family bonds often last many years. In some species, they last for a lifetime." This clearly states how these animals live together but even with that in mind the animals are still being taken away from their families, when in reality they should be a part of a large “Pod”, a family bond. Sometimes they’re alone, others they’re put with some family. But regardless they should be put in one and stick together. "Whales and dolphins travel long distances each day, sometimes swimming in a straight line for a hundred miles, other times remaining in a certain area for hours or days, moving several miles along a coastline and then turning to retrace their path. These marine mammals can dive up to several hundred meters and stay underwater for up to half an hour. They spend only 10 to 20% of their time at the surface." These animals aren’t meant for a confined space, they’re forced to swim in smaller pools, nothing compared to an ocean. As stated, they’re normally supposed to spend 10 -20% of the time above surface. But due to entertaining they spend way more, especially when interacting with people which they aren't used to doing in the wild. These animals deserve a free life in the ocean, not in captivity.
https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/marine-mammals-captivity

Called the Nautilus, a machine that uses the water flow in rivers to collect the waste, will drastically help remove water pollution and possible air pollutes. Autumn Bjugstad, the engagement director for the Greenway Foundation had reason for the machine,"The idea is to raise awareness about trash pollution in the South Platte River and its tributaries." The machine will have a positive impact on improving the quality of water in Colorado. In a contest, the winning team that has the best concept will have a chance to give their ideas to different agencies in hopes for an internship/job.

Anti Fast Food

It can make you obese and even cause type two diabetes. It is considered to be addictive and the more you eat the more you want. The food you receive is mixed with chemicals. Let’s talk about just how bad it is. Some eggs have ingredients found in soap and silly putty. The burgers you get from fast food places are fifty percent water and the actual meat is only 2.1 to 14.8 percent. The rest of that burger is filled with chemicals and preservatives. The chicken nuggets at fast food places contain a chemical preservative called TBHQ. TBHQ can cause nausea, vomiting, and death. Even the healthiest item at burger king, the salad, is filled with a day’s worth of sodium. Fast food drinks, and deserts are filled with a sweetener that causes more weight gain than regular sugar. In conclusion most, fast food restaurants make money by selling cheap, unhealthy, and dangerous products.

Global girls

https://www.nrdc.org/stories/how-you-can-stop-global-warming

Even though the U.S. may have withdrawn from the Paris Agreement you can still do your part to prevent global warming from being irreversible. This article tells you how you can do your part even in the comfort of your own home. For example, you can limit your water usage,in the bathroom, kitchen, or outside you can make sure you don’t leave it running or even though it may seem tedious turn it on and off while brushing your teeth. You can make sure you aren’t using electricity while you are and aren’t home, say you’re watching a movie you can make sure everything in the rooms that aren’t being used is off or unplugged. When you leave the house go through the rooms and make sure anything and everything is unplugged and that you aren’t leaving anything on. The most difficult but easy one may be reducing your food waste, which helps cuts down energy consumption. Though it may seem ridiculous to cut red meat, or any meat, out of your life it can really help reduce pollution in the air and in landfills. If you aren’t the type to be open to cut meat out of your life you could attempt to buy less food that you will finish instead of over consuming and buying too much food that ends up being thrown away.

Religious Discrimination

Religious discrimination can be a common occurrence as much as anywhere else. In fact, it is possibly one of the most common places. Mohsin Mohmed is one of many who experienced this first hand. Mohammed Khan used holiday time and unpaid leave twice to spend six weeks in the Holy City and believed it had been approved. Unfortunately, his request was unfairly dismissed as well as in the courtroom. Since December of 2003, all employers have been governed by new regulations designed to outlaw discrimination of religious belief but it has not always been a huge helper. Being able to take the issue seriously and have a policy in place is needed to communicate between managers, employers, and employees.
