Crude Oil is obtained by drilling wells into the underground reservoirs, often using oil rigs and platforms. The advantages are its high energy density, very efficient fuel source, and its ability to be refined into a wide variety of products, such as gas and chemicals. The disadvantages are drilling problems, air pollution, and oil spills that can harm the environment. An environmental impact is that it contributes to global warming.

https://www.petrosync.com/blog/what-is-crude-oil/

Mark and Cohen

How it is obtained: it is a byproduct of natural gas processing and petroleum refining

Advantages

a) Clean enough to be used indoors

b) easy to transport

c) It can be used to boost diesel-powered trucks, allowing them to burn more cleanly and get higher range out of their diesel

Disadvantages

a) requires specialized equipment to handle it, as to store it as a liquid you need a pressure tank as well as pressure-rated equipment

b) It is heavier than air, therefore when there is a leak, it will stay down near the ground, and potentially asphyxiate anyone nearby

Environmental impact: As it burns much cleaner than gasoline or diesel, it is safer for the environment compared to those fuels

Coal - Natalie & Ngan

How is it obtained

Coal is obtained primarily through mining (surface or subsurface).

2-3 Advantages of obtaining/using it

One advantage of obtaining/using coal is that it is one of the most abundant fossil fuels in the world. Another advantage is that it is cost-effective and cheaper than other gases and energy sources. Coal also happens to have a high energy density, so when it's burned it produces a significant amount of energy.

2-3 Disadvantages of obtaining/using it

One major disadvantage of obtaining/using coal is air pollution. It releases lots of very harmful toxins when burned. Another disadvantage is the greenhouse gas emissions it produces, like carbon dioxide, which contributes to climate change. Lastly, both the surface and subsurface mining required to get coal cause significant environmental damage like erosion, pollution, and habitat destruction.

1 Environmental impact (different from your disadvantages

Another environmental impact, aside from the disadvantages is land degradation and habitat loss. Surface mining in particular causes severe land degradation due to large areas of forests and ecosystems being cleared to access the coal deposits. These things lead to loss of biodiversity and long-term ecological damage.

1-2 pictures (website cited)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal
