Phishing is a cyber-enabled crime that allows people to steal information using technology by pretending to be someone else, for example a large organisation. This is most often done through text or email but can also be through other platforms including social media.

Phishing is these days the most common cyber attack as they often look valid or recognisable by the company's name, logo etc. Phishing scammers are often very knowledgeable when it comes to technology and can disguise phone numbers to pretend they are calling from the local area of the call recipient. They use company names and logos in scam emails which look extremely similar to one that you would usually be sent from that particular company.

In NSW a male in his 40's was jailed for two years as he was found guilty of 'producing, supplying or obtaining data' with intent to 'commit a computer offence.' The man used phishing scams to steal more than $100,000 from 450 people. The man used SMS to target customers from a number of banks including the Commonwealth Bank, NAB as well as Telstra. Therefore he was also charged with attempting the gain 'benefit by deception' and 'unauthorised access, modification or impairment.' He also used websites to lure people to enter their personal information which he then used to access their accounts including banks accounts.

As phishing scams are becoming more and more popular and are being reported more frequently, companies are able to let customers know when a possible scam is being sent around. Often companies are banks telling customers that a text message with their name is not actually legit and being sent from them, like in the case above.
