Classic (master) narrative is followed during Momento but not in the order which we normally see it in because the director Nolan wanted to represent the character's state of mind with the narrative of the film so that the audience were made to feel the same as Leonard.
The classic narrative is equilibrium - disequilibrium - Neo equilibrium.
but in momento we start at disequilibrium then go back to equilibrium.

Hero = Lenny
Villain = John G.
False hero = Teddy
= Sammy
Princes = Wife
femm fatale= natalie
Black and white =
Colour = flashback -(mode of adress is narrative)

Narrative codes
-action (NO)
-enigma (YES)
the audience solve the puzzle not the actor.

the overlap of the scenes are the reason for the name.
The use of black and white scenes show the forward plot line while the colour scenes are like flashbacks. so that the film males sense there is some overlap of visual and audio which allow us as the audience to put in place the sequences.

modes of address (artefacts)=
gun
poloroid picture
book
hairbrush
telephone

Characters - Leonard and Terry are binary opposites due to Terry being portrayed as a good guy at first (a police officer helping Leonard) and then turning out to be bad. Leonard is the good guy.

The film follows the enigma code (idea that the mystery of the truth drives the story) because we have the flashbacks which leave us wondering what will happen. You are never able to make up your mind about a character because they are represented in one way (such as Teddy is shown as the villain at the start but then we find that he isn't the murder.)

The black and white scenes use a significant object - use a telephone to drive the scene so each phone call we know that it is a forward in time.
