The Impact of Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on Refugees from Burmese Culture in Australia

Social inclusion and non-discrimination are vital for the mental health of Burmese refugees in Australia. According to Murray and Ferguson (2015), refugees experiencing higher levels of social inclusion report better mental health outcomes. Initiatives like language support and culturally sensitive services can reduce isolation and stress. Conversely, non-discrimination ensures equitable access to services and mitigates the impact of prejudice, which can exacerbate mental health issues (Murray & Ferguson, 2015). Ensuring that Burmese refugees are integrated and protected from discrimination can significantly enhance their well-being and successful resettlement in Australia.

Murray, K., & Ferguson, K.

This is one of the earliest Burmese dances still performed today, going back to roughly 2000 BCE. The Bilus are demons or ogres from ancient times. The Bilus are portrayed in literature as possessing shapeshifting abilities, allowing them to change their physical appearance(maria, 2022). There are 24 traditional demon forms, each with its name and role in stories and plays.

Maria.(2022, November 22).Traditional dances of Myanmar My Virtual World Trip.

https://myvirtualworldtrip.com/2022/11/08/traditional-dances-of-myanmar/

Health Issues and Treatment for Burmese Refugees Arriving in Australia

The Australian Government Department of Health (2017) states that trauma suffered both before and after migration is a prevalent cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is a common condition among Burmese refugees. They experience intense anxiety and intrusive recollections as symptoms of PTSD, which impairs their integration and well-being. Building trust, fostering a secure environment, and providing assistance that is cognizant of prior traumas are all components of trauma-informed care, which is a successful treatment. This method facilitates more efficient symptom management and treatment access for refugees. Healthcare professionals can assist Burmese refugees' mental health and assimilation more effectively by providing trauma-informed care.

Australian Government Department of Health.
Exploring Traditional Burmese Medicine: Thanaka's Significance in Skin Health

For almost a millennium, the powdered stem bark of Hesperethusa crenulata, also known as Thanaka, has been utilized in Myanmar in cosmetic products. Its biological activity and safety were examined in recent investigations. Various extracts from Thanaka bark were tested: water, hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and 85% ethanol. Strong anti-inflammatory and considerable antioxidant qualities, together with weak tyrosinase inhibition and minor antibacterial activities, were demonstrated by the results. (Wangthong and associates, 2010) All extracts exhibited extremely low cytotoxicity, with the water extract having an IC(50) of more than 12 mg/ml. No genotoxicity was found. Thanaka bark is therefore considered safe and advantageous for skin care.

Wangthong, S., Palaga, T., Rengpipat, S., Wanichwecharungruang, S. P., Chanchaisak, P., & Heinrich, M. This ability highlights the significance of understanding how migration and experiences as a refugees affect one's health (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice Framework, 2019). I try to apply this knowledge to my nursing practice by:

Improving Cultural Sensitivity: To better comprehend my patients' health issues, I actively educate myself about their cultures.
Holistic Assessments: When evaluating patients, I take migration-related variables into account.
Establishing Trust: I interact with empathy, admitting past traumas.
Collaborative Planning: I work with patients to develop care plans that respect their cultures.
These procedures guarantee that each patient's experience is respected and that the care is efficient.

Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds, Competency Standards Framework for Clinicians(2019, January).
