This is a current example of communications gone wrong - as politicians and other notable figures have called Covid-19 the "China Virus" or "Kung Flu", it has very unfortunately supported waves of xenophobic and violent behavior against Asians/Asian Americans during the pandemic.

When 8 people were killed in March earlier this year in the Atlanta spa shootings, there was a definite division amongst news sources around how they were recognizing the women working at the spas; some news sources alleged that the women were sex workers, while others carefully skirted around using that title. I thought that this was an interesting example of communications gone wrong because it really highlights how media relations are impacted by the American public narrative.
