What is Augmented Reality (AR)?

AR is a technology that lets you show and interact with virtual things or characters that are displayed in a way that seems like they are real. They are added to your world such as a life-like butterfly flying around the room.

What is the difference between AR and VR (Virtual Reality)?

The main difference between AR & VR is how much of the reality is simulated. As mentioned above, AR is something added to your world. VR is you added to a whole new world!
Different equipment is also used for both AR and VR. To experience AR, all you need is a smartphone with a camera. To access VR you need, at the very minimum, a headset to hold your phone.

What can you do with AR?

AR can be used to teach and learn things in a more fun and interactive way (e.g. learning anatomy without anything gross).
You can us AR to check out how a pair of glasses or new outfit looks on you. You can even see how certain furniture would look in your home before buying it. Another well known use of AR is gaming (e.g. Pokemon GO).

Color That with Quiver

It is now time for YOU to look at something through augmented reality (AR). You will get a taste of AR with an app called Quiver and a coloring sheet. Yes, you will be coloring!

Color It Directions

1. Download the Quiver app on your phone
2. Print a free Quiver coloring page from QuiverVision.com or you can print from the app
3. Color the page you printed
4. Open the Quiver app and view your coloring page to watch your creation move on the screen of your phone!

Modeling with TinkerCAD

1. Access tinkercad.com and create a personal account
Optional: "Learn the moves" walks you through a tutorial.
2. Click on the TinkerCAD logo on the top left corner
3. Click to create a new design. It will look like this:

4. Drag and drop the red cube on the workspace. It should look like this:

5. Change the cube to a flatter cube by changing the perspective using the right click or the perspective cube on the top left corner

6. Click on the cube and then click on the square that's red on the picture and hold it

7. Move the red square downwards until you see it has 4 units of height

8. For this next part, we are going to need the "roof" shape

9. Using the same technique as before, we are going to reshape the "roof" to be 3x3x20

10. Let's select the angle to turn the "arrow" upside down

11. To rotate, we will write 180 and hit

12. After aligning it with the cube, we need to place it a bit upwards

13. To move on another axis, press to select the workplane tool and click on the side of the cube

14. On this axis, allign the "roof" with the cube

15. Go back to the usual axis by clicking anywhere that is not a shape

16. Before making copies of it, we will change it to "hole", instead of "solid"

17. Make 4 copies using + and + and evenly distribute them within the limits of 20 units of length

18. Make an extra copy of the "roof" and rotate it +-90 degrees using your mouse

19. Place the cube nicely on the "grid" of "roofs"

20. Get the rotated "roof", make a copy and close the "grid"

21. Select everything

22. Click on "group"

23. As a final touch, change the color to brown

Are your ideas too big for TinkerCAD? Maybe you are just looking for a challenge! Download the Free Open Source software Blender and you can create pretty much anything you desire!

After you download and install Blender, go to the link below to learn more about how to work with it by the official website.

When you are comfortable using it, try to replicate what was done on TinkerCAD.

Your Turn

Now that you have an idea of what AR is and how it can be used to enhance our daily lives or to just have fun, let's create something you can augment!

For this step you will be using TinkerCAD to create a 3D object. You can create your own object, but we will walk through the process by building some virtual candy...a KitKat!

Remember, you can create a basic shape instead, but we think you will have fun building the virtual candy.

Career 2 - Game Design

Log into your Discovery Education (DE) account and complete the "Game Design with AR mindset GU" activity. Once you log in, you will see the activity at the top of the page on the sea turtle!

Career 1 - Manufacturing

Imagine looking through a device at an item being manufactured, but instead of seeing the item in front of you, you are able to look at the inside of it!
Another example is looking at blueprints and then they come to life similar to the coloring sheet you augmented. That is what can be accomplished by AR in Manufacture/Production.

Career 3 - Architect Concepts

Similar to this picture, architects could use AR to showcase how they would change a room or to give a virtual tour of a building they have designed.

Augment It

For this step, you will upload the 3D object you made in step 5 to view on the Merge Cube.

We will demonstrate this using the Virtual KitKat. Please walk through these steps with your own creation.

1. With your 3D object being viewed in TikerCAD, hit the "export" button

2. Select .STL as the exporting format and save the file on your computer

Make sure to watch where it is being saved on your computer. If you forget, look first in your downloads.

3. Go to the Merge EDU website and login with the same account you used on the app

4. Under "My Stuff", click on "Upload"

5. Search for or drop the file you just created and hit "continue"

6. After your object has been successfully uploaded, hit "continue" again.

7. Click on save and then go to the app on the phone

8. From your phone, click on the 3 lines on the top left

Merge Cube It

We are going to take a look at another example of Augmented Reality!

Did you ever build 3D squares in elementary school? Have you ever used a QR code? A Merge Cube is a mix between those two items. Today you can build one for free!

Merge Cube It Directions

1. Download the Merge Object Viewer app on your phone
2. Have the Merge Cube you created with you
3. Open the Merge Object App and select an object from any collection
4. After the object has downloaded, you will point the phone camera at the Merge Cube.
5. The Merge Cube will transform into the selected object (on your phone). As you rotate the Merge Cube, the object will rotate in the same way!

Making your Own Merge Cube

Visit mergecube.com/paper-pdf and a pdf merge cube will download on your computer.
Print it and then assemble.
