Analysis: Huxley made Bernard more awkward than the rest of the Alphas in order to show how individuality separates you from other people. It also works as a way to connect us to Bernard because after doing a character chart on ourselves, we can see that we are not too different from Bernard. In Huxley’s story, Bernard is the outsider but in today’s society, Bernard would fit right in. When Lenina wonders why Bernard wants to go for a walk, Bernard responds with, “To be alone with you Lenina.” This shows that he is thoughtful unlike the rest of the population, once again establishing individuality. 

Claim: Bernard’s personality is very solemn. He isn’t sociable and stands out in a crowd. 

Analysis: Huxley focuses more and more on Bernard’s individuality by showing how Bernard’s actions and diction are noticeably different from that of the rest of society. For example, when the population is very involved with sexual intercourse, Bernard says, “I still rather wish it had all ended differently. . . I didn’t want it to end with our going to bed.” (93) Bernard wants things deeper than physical affection. 

Analysis:  Huxley made Bernard an Alpha plus but described him as being short and thin.  This was done to explore the extent to which people rely solely on physical characteristics to judge a person.  Bernard is a very intelligent individual and has a high ranking in society but struggles to find a partner and is not taken seriously by others because he is deformed.  People see him as being strange because if the way that he looks
