I know you’re probably thinking: That’s a huge statement to make, but listen; There are plenty of great horror films out there, but when you really sit and watch Insidious, it’s like you’re sitting right there with the characters, going through the same horrors they do. From the camera techniques to the infamous shiver-inducing music, to the characters and acting, Insidious is a movie to behold. The family doesn’t know about his abilities, but when one day while their son was playing in the attic, he fell and hurt himself, that next day, he didn’t wake up. Doctors doomed the boy to be in a coma and the family was devastated. Not only is their eldest son in a “coma” creepy scary things begin to happen in the house. The mother of the household demands they move, only to find out that the scary things are still happening. From close-ups showing the look of pure horror on a character's face to an overhead shot; where we’re looking down on the characters, to a shot that will follow behind a character and never cut to another, to a shot where we’re blinded* while something terrifying is happening to characters. Another Auteur thing I love about James Wan is that he will hide things, secret messages, in almost every shot that has a part in the main climax. Like the pictures Dalton drew on the wall; they come back into play in the climax of the movie.

Without that chilling soundtrack, Insidious would only be 75% great. It’s so great that Wan would go on to use it in 3 more sequels. Some cheesy horror movies even tried to use the music but couldn’t use it in the way Wan does. When your nerves are already wracked because you hear little baby Callie crying, and then see Renai with a look of concern and fear--wondering what the heck is happening because we can only see Renai, and then that ear piercing scream was enough--but then BOOM PIANO! VIOLINS! Makes you literally jump out of your skin. It’s freaking awesome and once it’s over your left with that delicious fear-induced adrenaline, or you’re crying. Another thing that you won’t notice unless you’re a fan; every time a demon or someone scary is in a shot we cannot see, the scene is silent except for an eerie crackling noise.
