Nick observes Gatsby's awkwardness and attempts at charm. Daisy is the focus of his anxiety. Gatsby wants Daisy to see him as successful and confident but his nerves betray him.

Nick utilises descriptive language when depicting Daisy's arrival to the readers in her car under the "dripping bare lilac-trees".

Gatsby tends to repeat his words and speak in a faster, more wordy pace upon awaiting Daisy's arrival, due to his nervousness. He states, "Of course, of course! They're fine! ... old sport", highlighting his concern about Daisy's perception.

Gatsby grabs Nick's attention by saying "the front of it catches the light," utilising decriptive language to draw beauty to his new house.

Nick uses a similie when stating that Gatsby "smiled like a weatherman," after he realises that the rain had stopped. (pg.86)

When Gatsby is talking passionately about his new house, Nick responds with a simple "yes." which shows the different sentence lengths. This might symbolise how enthusiastically Gatsby talks and how he likes to show off, while others are not interested.

In Gatsby's attempt to parade his success to Nick, he patronizes Him by talking about his status when asking nick about not 'making much money', this is an attempt to gain more authority over nick in a subtle way after he begins to pick up on Gatsby's mannerisms. this is exemplified through his 'suppressed eagerness' and his drive to continue his night with nick and increase the chances of his plan unfolding.

In this section Gatsby is wanting to impress Daisy. When Nick and Gatsby are talking Nick notices that Gatsby "hardly knew what he was saying" emphasizing That Gatsby is not fully present in this conversation because he is thinking of Daisy and wondering what she will think of him and his house. When Gatsby is talking to Daisy he tries to impress her, checking with Nick that the front of the house "catches the light" before showing her his house. He tells Daisy that he likes to keep his house "full of interesting people" implying that he thinks Daisy is an interesting person as she will soon be in her house. It illustrates how Gatsby likes Daisy but cannot say it outright because of their social standings and different situations. The section highlights Gatsby's attempts to impress Daisy.

Daisy is more prominent throughout this passage, especially due to her being warned to "Not bring Tom" to tea. Gatsby's yearning for this moment overshadows his behaviour. This results in him being jittery and overall reserved, causing Daisy to feel a sense of discomfort. Moreover, her reaction is accompanied by the awkwardness of meeting Gatsby after such a prolonged period of time. Therefore, resulting in Gatsby seeking every opportunity to leave the conversation and believing the tea was a " terrible mistake". The exact opposite reaction Gatsby was longing for.

Throughout the passage, we see Nick begin to distance himself from Gatsby, we see this when Nick rejects his offer to go to the swimming pool or coney island because it is 'too late', this explore nicks true feeling towards Gatsby as they become more entangled in each others lives. Nick is able to observe his nervous mannerisms and begins to see through Gatsby's performances and 'old sport[s]' to his superficiality and insipidness.

In this passage Gatsby appears to be very nervous and anxious about his reunion and encounter with Daisy. An example would be when Gatsby clumsily tits a clock and picks it up with his 'trembling fingers.' Another key indication of Gatsby's strange behaviour is when he recalls exactly how long him and Daisy haven't seen each other. Nick describes the answer as 'automatic' and describes that the statement 'set us all back.' Through-out the passage Gatsby's awkward behaviour reflects his nervousness but also desire for Daisy.

I think Gatsby takes this date with Daisy very seriously, from 'Gatsby in a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold-coloured tie.' we can know he were a very formal clothes for date. Also from "He was pale, with traces of sleeplessness under his eyes." shows us he prepared this very tired.

When Gatsby thought Daisy would not come then he want to leave, from that also indicate Gatsby his nervous for meet Daisy and only care about Daisy.

The variation in Gatsby and Nick's lines amplifies the bluntness towards Gatsby as nick becomes more aware of his manipulation. As seen, nick in direct when rejecting nicks offer as he says 'its too late' and '[He's] got to go to bed'. Gatsby's longer responses presents him as eager or desperate to gain the affection and approval from nick.
