I began to question from the begining of the story whether Coach Hartwell could be trusted. Jonas said on page 99, " I always thought adults could be trusted but soon found out this was not so." What I read made a lot of sense. I couldn't wait to find out if honesty or dishonesty would win out.

I felt connected to Jonas. He was caught between a good friend and a dishonest coach. He tried to please both. Sometime in our lives we might come in contact with someone like Coach Hartwell who was a user/abuser and dishonest. Then like Jonas we will have to make the chocie to do the right thing.

When Hartwell smacked into Coach Knecht (P.164) Jonas said, "Our eyes locked for an instant and we looked hard at one another, as if we were sharing a dark, unspoken secret." I read between the lines that this was not an accident at all and that maybe Hartwell planed it. Another time was when Hartwell lured Jonas into cheating (P.115). I thought Hartwell wanted to have some kind of a hold over Jonas in case he needed it!

The camping trip (P. 74-75) up in the mountains was one of the best passages that I could easily visualize in my mind's eye. The full description of unloading the trunk, paying the fee and going over the checklist of what they needed. This is something I have done many times with my family here in Colorado. I also felt as Jonas felt when he looked up at the sky and understood how worthwhile the trip was taking.(P.77)

Levi and Jonas become High School friends and discover that they both loved to play basketball. Levi was simple (P.64) like a child. It was the best thing about him, and it was the worst, too. Jonas in comparison was ambitious about getting into college no matter what the cost.
Coach Hartwell befriends them both and then deceives both of then. Both boys pay a big price in the end, Levi commits suicide and Jonas has to give up his dream to attend his favorite college.

However, Jonas finds his way to make things right but must pay a huge price for his mistakes in the end.
