  • Le charbon est créé à partir de biomasse enfouie dans le sol, généralement à plusieurs kilomètres de profondeur. 
  • Il est composé d'hydrogène, de souffre d'oxygène et surtout de carbone. Chaque type de charbon (lignite, sous-bitumineux et bitumineux, anthracite) est classé en fonction de sa teneur en carbone. 
Les charbons de hauts rangs sont composés à plus de 70% de carbone.
 
  • Les mines souterraines : les gisements peuvent s’étendre sur des milliers de km2, à plusieurs kilomètres sous la surface. Il s’agit d’abord de déterminer la qualité et la forme du gisement, puis de définir les techniques à utiliser pour l’abattage (l’extraction). 
  • Les mines à ciel ouvert : cette forme d’exploitation n’est possible que lorsque les gisements ne sont qu’à quelques dizaines de mètres de profondeur. L’exploitation s’effectue en couches successives. 
Le charbon est une variété particulière  de kérogène, qui se forme à partir de débris  de végétaux dits "supérieurs"  (arbres, fougères...).

La formation du charbon dans le sous-sol remonte à l’ère primaire dite "carbonifère", il y a 200 à 300 millions d’années.

-Tout commence dans un marécage, en bordure d'un bassin sédimentaire, des mouvements tectoniques provoquent la montée du niveau de la mer : la végétation, noyée, meurt. 

-Les arbres et les débris végétaux s'accumulent et sont recouverts de masses de boue et de sable sous l'effet de la sédimentation. Cet enfouissement les met à l'abri de l'air et leur évite de pourrir rapidement.

 La végétation se reconstitue au-dessus; jusqu'au prochain engloutissement.
Les couches de végétaux morts sont soumises à une augmentation de la température qui provoque leur transformation progressive. La cellulose, composant principal du bois, passe ainsi par différentes phases. Après la tourbe, premier stade de sédimentation, viennent le lignite puis la houille, puis l'anthracite. Ce dernier possède la teneur en carbone la plus élevée.
