(Bradbury 37)

"Montag had done nothing. His hand had done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own, with a conscience and a curiosity in each trembling finger, had turned thief" (Bradbury 38)

Montag is mentally lost given that he "stole" a book from the ladies' home. Montag and the other fireman were supposed to burn all of the books but Clarisse had gotten to Montag. She gave him a reason to question one of the very things he has done for his whole life. He is questioning the one thing he has worked for over a book.
