Relationships in the story are very important to the development of the plot. The first relationship shared with the main character is a friendship, with a Jewish radio operator. She understood that the radio operator wouldn't live long, as he was infact a Jew, so she kept him company.

Another relationship she had was with a man she had fallen madly for on the eve of her nineteenth birthday. He had fallen for her too. "Our eyes locked across a crowded room. And it was as if a magnet drew us irresistibly towards each other."
