Analysis: This extract shows Odysseus' skill in rhetoric and cleverness. He flatters Calypso so as not to insult her while he is giving her his reasons for wanting to return home. By flattering Calypso he is less likely to make her angry and she may help him return home.

Suggests he may be suffering from PTSD. The word "heavily" highlights just how much of a hardship those things must have been for him. He was unlucky to have had to face the various misfortunes, but he is brave because he still plays the games with the Phaeacians, despite feeling haunted by the past.
