The year Henry VIII bestowed upon Wolsey the office of Lord Chancellor in his government following the resignation of William Warham. In this year, Wolsey was also created a Cardinal by Pope Leo X. Both titles symbolised the quick rise of Wolsey through the church and government of England having come from humble origins. The son of a butcher from Ipswich was able to impress Henry VIII with his ambition, organisation and attention to detail. His effectiveness at delivering results for his king saw his rapid promotion to high office.

This year marks the final year to the end of his downfall. One reason due to his downfall was because of his failure to secure the divorce between Henry and Catherine of Aragon - the court in June 1529 was immediately refused by Catherine. In the summer of 1529, Henry used Wolsey’s position as papal legate to accuse him of Praemunire (working in the interests of the Pope rather than the King). Because of this, he was stripped of his titles and positions and exiled to the diocese of York.
