Francis Home, a Scottish physician, demonstrated in 1757 that measles is caused by an infectious agent in the blood of patients.

Symptoms appear around 10-14 days after exposure. Early symptoms last 4-7 days and include cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and small white spots on the inside of the cheeks. Measles deaths result from complications related to the virus. These complications include blindness, encephalitis (an infection that causes brain swelling and possible brain damage), severe diarrhea and dehydration, ear infections, and serious breathing problems such as pneumonia.

There is no treatment for measles. The main idea is to relieve symptoms, making sure the person is comfortable as well as preventing said complications. Doctors may use antibiotics to treat symptoms like pneumonia and ear and eye infections. Taking vitamins, specifically vitamin A supplements restore low vitamin A levels which can reduce Measles deaths.
