African American and Latino/Hispanic students are the 2 largest minority groups in the US, therefore, teachers that understand these cultures and their back rounds better accomplish making schools a more productive learning environment.
2. African American students face a "more complex array of developmental tasks", since their homes are often more black-dominated culture while schools are often more white-dominated culture.
3.

- There are many misconceptions about language and literacy development. For example, bilingual children can not learn each language as well and it confuses children
- It takes 2 years to be able to speak a language , and 5-7 years to be able to write it. Many students new to english struggle because they cannot read it well, although they speak it well.
- Bi literate children receive support from their parents at home. They do things such as storytelling, role playing, signing and dancing to help participate in cultural activities and teachers should do this to support students in the classroom
