As mentioned, when I grew up it became easier for me to connect and better understand the circumstance that my father was in. There was a movie called The Intouchables that shared a similar concept as this scene. In short, the main character is attempting to explain his experience before and after his accident and why it impacts him so much.

What makes my witnessing unique

Being in the same position as Lou where I get to be in a very close relationship with the person impacted, I am able to share the experience even though I cannot experience it first hand. This witnessing is different because it goes beyond looking from the outside in. I am able to empathize, in my case, with my father on a level that other people cannot as I have seen and gone on the journey through his life with him. Getting older and hearing his experience also adds another layer to my witnessing because I now have a more active roll that I previously did not have.

In life we are taught to empathize and show compassion toward other people. We are taught that we should let people know that when they are going through a difficult time in life that they are not going through it alone and you should try to understand what they are going through to the best of your ability.

Though we are taught this, we are no taught to properly assess the situation and see whether or not the person in the situation wants to be empathized with or not. In "The Empathy Exams" we are informed that sometimes the person in a situation would rather take ownership of their circumstance without someone reaching out trying to understand.

My father and I have become closer I have I have begun writing this paper because I started asking him a lot of questions about his experience and this not only made him feel like he was being heard but it made me feel like I was getting a closer eye into the life he had been living. This is the true definition of empathy because I am not just understanding him but we are understanding each other's perspectives and experiences.

My father did an interview with the rehabilitation center that he was at and this was a small portion of what he had to say. After reading it I saw that he truly does live by this quote and ensures that he teaches me to do the same. He lives his life by the principle that he is the same person he was before the accident and even if he does have to work harder than other people do, he does not mind. He gives one hundred percent of himself because he was put through a traumatic experience and he does not regret what happened to him but he is thankful that he had the experience and is a better person because of it.
