Themes of 1984- How constant surveillance instills constant paranoia and distrust of fellow members of society and how censorship of the mind by the government leads to the loss of the ability to realize fact from fiction
Examples- (Survellience and Paranoia)
Winston thinks that he is going to get taken by the Thoughtpolice because he begins diary and assumes that they have already discovered what he is doing, accepts his death, and begins to plan how he should try to stay alive: “ Now that he had recognized himself as dead man it became important to stay alive as long as possible. (Pg. 28)
Winston becomes absolutly certain that Julia is spying on him because he has seen her a few times: “ Whether she was really agent of the Thought Police, or simply an ameteur spy actuated by the officiousnnes, hardly mattered. It was enoughthat she was watching him.” (Pg. 101)
Examples- (Censorship of the mind)
Winston gives into the torture and forces himself to believe the Party’s beliefs and allows his mind to become censored: “He accepted everything. The past was alterable. The past has never been altered. Oceania was at war with Eastaisa. Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia. Jones Aaronson, and Rutherford were guilty of the crimes they committed.”
Interpretation-
Approach was employed to display the possible consequences constant government watch and censorship of materials can have on a society and to send a wakeup call to those how allow themsleves to be censored in everyday life
Application-
Cellphone companies are collecting data from our phones all of the time. Makes us question of how much data they are collecting from us, how are using this, and if we under constant watch by the government. Are our cell phones modern day telescreens? https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/04/us/politics/nsa-surveillance-2017-annual-report.html

Motif trends: eyes, time, paperweight, churches, singing, color/light + darkness
Examples:
Time:
Beginning of novel when Winston was unsure of his stance on the party: "...but it was never possible nowadays to pin down any date within a year or two." (pg 7)
After being released from imprisonment, freshly filled with Big Brother ideals: "...a vile, biting day in March..." (pg 290)
After talking to Julia about control and torture: "...it must have been about a month..."(295)
Paperweight:
"The paperweight was the room he was in, and the coral was Julia's life and his own, fixed in a sort of eternity at the heart of the crystal." (pg 147)
"Someone had picked up the glass paperweight from the table and smashed it to pieces on the hearthstone." (pg 223)
Interpretation: The use of motifs such as time and the paperweight, are used to distinguish between the past, present, and future, and how Winston's life is changing with his opinion and knowledge of the Party.
Application: The brain telling time: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/your-brain-has-two-clocks/ .

The various tones of 1984: vulgar, gruesome, vile, gleeful, dreadful, cold
Examples:
Gruesome, Vulgar Tones:
(Beginning setting)
"The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rug mats.” (Pg 1)
"... there seem to be no color in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere.” (Pg 2)
Gleeful Tones:
(Moments depicted with the temporary love of Julia)
"The air seemed to kiss one’s skin.” (Pg 117)
"... he found that they were in a natural clearing, a tiny grassy knoll surrounded by tall saplings...” (Pg 119)
Dreadful Tones:
(Winston being help captive in the Ministry of Love)
"… a lavatory pan with no wooden seat. There were four telescreens, one on each wall.” (Pg 225)
"Amid a stream of blood and saliva, the two halves of a dental plate fell out of his mouth.” (Pg 236)
Interpretation: The purpose of these shifting tones exists to emphasize the brutality of Big Brother’s lifestyle and to highlight drastic settings in order convey the nature of Winston’s controlled thinking and experiences by Big Brother.
Application: How iPhones can control our mind/body similarly to the effects of Big Brother.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-smartphones-hijack-our-minds-1507307811

Trends of setting: toxic life at home and working at the Ministry of truth, a happy life where the proles live and in the field, and conversion after caught.

Examples

Life at home:
“The Ministry of Truth, his place of work, towered vast and white above the grimy landscape.” (pg. 3)
“By sitting in the alcove, and keeping well back, Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen, so far as sight went.” (pg. 6)
“It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen.” (pg. 62)
Life with proles:
“He stopped thinking and merely felt.” (pg. 124)
“Everyone wanted a place where they could be alone occasionally.” (pg. 137)
“Getting there was difficult, but the room itself was a sanctuary.” (pg. 151)
“Proles and animals are free.” (pg. 72)
“They were always happy dreams. He was in the Golden Country...not doing anything.” (pg. 275)
Life captured:
“To die hating them, that was freedom.” (pg. 281)
Interpretations:
These changing settings emphasize that there is no perfect life and sacrifices must always be made, but the life you seek may be where you least expect it. In Winston’s current life, he is wealthy and knowledgeable, but is always controlled by the party and unhappy. The proles, however, are poor and ignorant, but not controlled by the party and happy.
Application:
Overall wealth of people has increased over time, but people are not any happier, possibly even less happy. This is similar to Winston’s unhappiness in his current life.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/21/opinion/happiness-inequality-prosperity-.html

Recurring devices of 1984:
oxymoron and flashbacks
Examples:
Party Slogans (oxymoron)
"War is Peace"
"Ignorance is Strength" "Freedom is Slavery" (pg. 4)

Flashbacks
Winston makes from a dream that was really a memory of his mother from his childhood.
" 'Do you know,' he said, 'that until this moment I believed I had murdered my mother?' " (pg. 160)
Interpretation:
The oxymoron of the slogans point out the false level of trust and loyalty the people have in the Party and Big Brother.
The flashbacks emphasize the amount of control the part has on the past because Winston cannot put together a memory without wondering if it is a lie.
Application:
Today people have little trust in the government because of fake news. this is comforting because it means that the citizens still question the government, so a government like 1984 can be prevented.
https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/01/trust-trump-america-world/550964/

Imagery - Cate Rocheleau

Trends of imagery:
The imagery conveys a sense of being trapped, miserable, and insanity
Examples:
"Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky harsh blue" (pg. 2)
"Lunch in the hot, noise filled canteen was torment"( pg 108)
"He was in a high-ceilinged windowless cell with walls of glittering porcelain." (pg. 224)
"he had fallen through the floor, through walls of the building, through the oceans, through the atmosphere, into outer space, into the gulfs between stars" (pg. 286)

Interpretation
This type of imagery is created to develop the idea that the reality is only in our heads. The society in 1984 views Winston as insane for having his own thoughts and rebelling, which helps convey how he ended up trapped and miserable in a society that lied to him, convincing him he was insane.

Application:
In our daily lives, we receive all of our information from social media, the news, and newspapers, but what is to say it is the truth or records have not been changed? 1984 makes us contemplate the society we live in and what are actual reality is. We have been living in it for such a long time it would be difficult to see the truth if we are being lied to.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/nothing-on-this-page-is-real-how-lies-become-truth-in-online-america/2018/11/17/edd44cc8-e85a-11e8-bbdb-72fdbf9d4fed_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.848de4523b04
