I the book, Melinda has both external and internal conflict. Throughout the book, she lives her school life without any friends. She lost them due to what happened over the summer at the party. In the beginning, she even states, "There is no point in looking for my ex-friends." This is external conflict because all her friends abandoned her and she has almost no one to talk to now, except her new friend, Heather, who doesn't know about the situation from the summer.

In the book Melinda doesn't have anyone she can trust. This leads to her keeping all of her emotions to herself, which can lead to her being depressed. You also get this from her art teacher who said "This has meaning. Pain." Even get was able to realize that Melinda is going through hard times.
