         <title>Metacognition</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>By Katelin Morrison<br><br>Dr. Saundra McGuire is a well known professor and author.  Throughout her career she taught thousands of students the importance of using metacognitive learning techniques in a classroom setting, and beyond. In the video she sits down to an interview with Hunter Chapman to discuss what metacognition is. She initially describes metacognition as the ability to think about your own thinking. Or as if you have a brain outside of your brain that is analyzing the activities of your brain. (McGuire, 2013, 0:43) She emphasized the importance of planning, and recognizing exactly what techniques work for you and your learning style, instead of just going through study techniques blindly. (McGuire, 2013, 1:57)<br><br>After watching this video, I was able to have enhanced clarity on what metacognition actually is. The video gave some good metacognitive study techniques that I hope to implement into my own routine. Dr. McGuire mentioned that one method students have used, is the act of teaching the material to someone else. (McGuire, 2013, 3:34) I plan to use this technique, because if I study with the intent to teach someone else, this will help me to really think carefully about the information. Additionally she mentioned that some students use illustrations, or concept maps, to help to visually lay out the material. (McGuire, 2013, 3:55) I definitely think this technique will work for me since I am a visual learner. These and other techniques are something that I plan to keep in mind so that I can have better understanding of future course work, and ultimately have success in college, and in my future career.<br><br></div><div>Citation:</div><div>McGuire, S., &amp; Chapman, H.          <title>growth mindset</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>by Catherine Volinski<br><br>Tyler Waye he has went all around the world talked to people. Mainly about leadership and explaining growth mindsets to young teens and even adults. Tyler explains that he was an athlete and ended up braking his bones , was in a wheelchair for months and had said that's when things went down bad. He needed to turn everything upside and make it right. (Tyler,2013,2:30) he explains that his friend which is his mentor , the decisions that you are making will be the best thing that will happen to you because that hard work will pay off and give you what you have been working for.<br><br><br>After watching this video, it made me understand even when things are rough not to  turn down those other things. To always push your self and to be a better person! To do those things you need to have a plan always and just prepare yourself for what is coming up. This habit has been one of the ways that are being taught in school and students are saying that learning that way has made them successful. This habit of mind is very essential to success in the classroom, because instead of rehearsing what we want to say next when a student is talking, we should invest ourselves into another person’s ideas. (Costa &amp; Kallick, 2008) I liked how the author says, “students need to hold in abeyance their own values, judgements, and thoughts, so they can listen to and entertain another person’s thoughts.” (Costa &amp; Kallick, 2008) This quote shows us that by momentarily pausing our train of thought, and opening our mind to what someone else is saying,  we can not just listen, but also gain the true meaning.          <title>Mindfulness</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>by Chikeluba Izugha <br>Shauna Shapiro tells us of how she began her journey into mindfulness, when she was 17 she had spinal fusion surgery, she expressed how she went from a very active teenager to lying in the hospital. After many months of rehabilitation, she found it very difficult to cope with a body that could not allow her to do what she normally did before. Because she did not have what she needed to cope with the new change to her life she began searching and stumbled across a monastery in Thailand, where she tried to do meditation but after a short time her mind wandered away and kept wandering away each time she tried to meditate. Because our mind wanders, on average 47% of the time (Shauna, 2017, 2:47), she expressed how we miss out on almost half of our lives because of this constant wandering away of our minds, she describes mindfulness as simply training the mind on how to be here in order words, how to keep your mind focused and attentive at whatever your are doing at that particular time. After trying and trying again she became frustrated and a monk came to meet her and told her five words she never forgot which were what you practice grows stronger (Shauna, 2017, 4:30) furthermore, repetition helps even to shape our brain. <br><br></div><div>      After watching the video, I was surprised to hear about how much our minds wander throughout our lives, and how this wandering of our mind makes us miss out on a lot of things in our lives. Also, nobody is born perfect and we can never attain perfection, but to be good at any thing we do we need to constantly practice.
