The Caraquet Acadian Tintamarre

By Jorge Felix

The Acadian Tintamarre set in Caraquet, New Brunswick, is easily the noisiest, loudest, and cheeriest gathering of people for the celebration of both National Acadian Day, and the Francophonie. Set through Caraquet Main Street, as well as surroundings, participants come equipped with all sorts of colorful clothes, pots, spoons, kitchen utensils, and practically everything that can make noise. Prizes, after all, are given to the best noisemaker, and the best costume.
Plenty of food and drink of all sorts to be had by attendees, this 20,000+ people festival isn't something you'd want to miss.

The festival supports both Acadian and Francophone culture by implementing in itself long-standing traditions of both. Acadian clothes and customs are used and celebrated throughout the event. Symbolism in the form of artwork and music strengthens the link between present visitors and tourists, and a canada of the past. 10 puppets depicting important canadian people drew the attention of many in last year's instance of the festivity. The majority of the program is in French.

The event encourages backers and sponsors, and proudly displays them in it's official site. Among them, the Canadian Heritage branch of government is first. How much they contributed to last year's festival isn't public, but it makes sense that they'd involve themselves in a major cultural event. Though this is only speculation, I can only imagine that what they helped contribute wasn't minor. This, after all, was not a minor event. Of corporate sponsors, Alpine Lager, Village Historique Acadien, and Acadienouvelle.com were the most prominent ones. A beer company, historical reconstruction site, and a newspaper respectively, it could be said that they all benefited in some way or the other from the successes of the event, and as such contributed extensively to the festival.

Corporations in a globalizing world can, under the incentive of having large crowds of people to advertise to, fund events that are interesting and fun to attend, in a way that ends up helping everyone. Governments, with the goal of improving the quality of life in their nation, can organize events that enrich and strengthen cultural identities.

The festival has been around since 1894. It gives Quebeckers and thousands of visitors a reason to celebrate during the cold winter. It is the biggest winter festival in the world and is celebrated annually.

This festival begins on the last week of January, and continues for 17 days. Originally this tradition began when habitants of New France (Quebec) gathered together before Lent. Lent is a religious practice that involves prayer, fasting, repentance etc.. It is a preparation for Easter. Since this occasion is so solemn the carnival was established to help everyone get out their partying mood before Lent.
The Carnival is funded in part by the Canadian Government. In the past they donated $1.4 million to support. Other donors are, the Quebec Government, the Quebec Lotto, Quebec City, Christie Crackers, and Hydro Quebec. The winter carnival celebrates the culture of Quebec by wearing the same traditional arrow sash. In the past they wore the sash to keep them warm and protect the back during effort. The mascot speaks fluent French, English, and Spanish but his name is French. That shows the support of the culture.

Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Racing

By Katie

Summary:
The Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Race was formed by The Gateway North Sled Dog Race association, which is a non-profit organization. They were formed in 1994 to encourage and promote the culture of traditional dog sled racing in Saskatchewan.

Main Info:
Dog sledding was formed by Northern Aboriginal peoples as a way to travel in the winter. The Early Europeans explorers and trappers that immigrated to Canada saw this and adopted it into their culture. Teams of 2 to 12 dogs are usually tied in pairs to a single towline or 'gangline' in dog sledding. The 'gangline' is attached to a sled and pulled across the snow by the dogs. In some situations the dogs can be placed in single file between two tow lines. In some other situations, each dog is attached to the sled with it's own towline, which is called the "fan hitch".
The Canadian Challenge Dog Race helps people remember how the aboriginal peoples and early explorers and trappers lived. It celebrates the culture of the Canadian people that lived in Canada in the beginning. The race follows a route very similar to that of the old dog sled trail that ran between Prince Albert and La Ronge which was used by trappers, the North West Mounted Police, and the First Nations peoples. The total distance is approximately 600 kilometers. Its the longest sled dog race withing Canadian borders. They honor the old sled teams by running the same trails.

The organization is run entirely by volunteers and a volunteer Board of Directors. The Directors come from all different backgrounds and cultures. The race is funded by fundraising and sponsorship. Some sponsors are: IFSS (International Federation of Sledding Sports), Sask Energy, Dog's Choice, and Perfectly Raw. Each year, the Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Race tries to raise around $11 000. The corporations help support the celebration of the Canadian culture by funding and supporting the Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Race.

There is delicious food, creative cultural performances, and celebration of the multiculturalism of Canada.

Main info: People gather from around the world to Edmonton to celebrate their cultures. They perform and showcase their native food and activities. For example, some of the things that the Chinese served was traditional fried rice, spring rolls, and fortune cookies. The kids and adults dance in Chinese dragon suits that come from Chinese New year. Another example would be Zimbabwe. They serve sadza. A very traditional dish in Zimbabwe. They also preform by banging on their nations drums, and dance exotically to their Zimbabwe music.
The government of Alberta (provincial government) gives grants to help pay for the tents, and the upkeep of the festival.

By Mika and Brianne

Japan Festival Canada is an event established to appreciate both country’s beautiful cultures and deepen their relationships. This festival is held in Mississauga Celebration Square, Ontario.

Canada and Japan have lots of history that dates back to 1929 when Canada’s diplomatic office in Tokyo opened. Almost 90 years later these relationships are still thriving, thus the Japanese Festival of Canada was created to celebrate the rich Japanese culture and history and to show the importance of the Japanese to Canadians.

This supports the Japanese Culture because they showcase Japanese talent and language. This is being mainly sponsored by non-government organizations like Canon, Yamaha, Air Canada, and more other than the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Government of Ontario. The way that corporations promote these cultures and languages is by doing these Festivals and making sure that people all around the globe are acknowledged and accepted. We live in such a culturally diverse world that is constantly growing and we need to celebrate and embrace every culture.

by Michael and Andrew
Chinese New Year celebrates the first day of the new year calendar which is a lot older then the normal calendar. It always begins in between January 21 and February 21 and lasts for several days. Celebrations include fireworks, arts, special foods, dancing, drumming, traditional clothing and parades. it celebrated in multiple cities across Canada.

The origins of dragon dances are from several Chinese legends. The Chinese lunar calendar has one of the twelve animals from the zodiac, associated with each year. The new year says bye bye to the last animal, and gives a big great welcome to the next one. The festivals are mostly financially supported by Chinese businesses, but the federal government of Canada affirms the Chinese culture by Canada Post releasing stamps that have the Chinese animals on them and made Chinese New Year an official holiday in 2016.

This was organized by local fan Mike Shacklock and there were about 2 dozen attendees. Little by little, word got around and our three-times yearly pingfest gatherings usually see anywhere from 50 to 85 people coming out for the afternoon. Here we are, with 50 pingfests and 7 Coronation Street personality events under our belt.
http://pingfest.uns.ac.id/
who supports them?
