49's came mostly from Latin America, specifically Mexico, and the gold seekers came mostly from the Asia region.

The Asian immigrants soon found out when they reached America, that they were not welcomed and the Americans even raised the monthly tax but only for foreign minors.

Many people were negatively affected by the gold rush and many even perished from starvation and disease. The California landscape was also severely damaged as rivers were dammed or clogged with cement, and forests were logged.

The sudden influx of gold into the money supply reinvigorated the American economy, and the sudden population increase allowed California to go rapidly to statehood, in the Compromise of 1850.

The government thought it was imperative that the white settlers needed the room to claim the gold on traditional tribal lands.

Assimilation means the process of taking in and fully understanding information or ideas. The cultural assimilation of Native Americans was an assimilation effort by the United States to transform Native American culture to European and American culture between the years of 1790 and 1920.

The key turning points in this relationship were the clash over land and natural resources, and when the Indians resisted settlement on reservations.

4. Great Plains Farmers

There were two main things that lured the settlers to Great Plains. First was the attraction of large amounts of relatively cheap land that could be cultivated, and the second was the presence of main railroads.

Pioneers passed through Great Plains and continued to move west because they thought the area was unsuitable for farming.

There were several new farming technologies and techniques such as the mechanized reaper, barbed wire, dry farming, steel plow, harrow, steel windmill, hybridization, and grain drill. The mechanized reaper made it easier to have larger farms without the need of extra hands.

Settlers were called sodbusters because they had to break through the sod to plant crops. There was not a lot of wood so, settlers used sod to build homes. Winters were long and cold. Summers were hot and dry.
