Looking forward: I am looking forward to closing out this year, (still a LOT to do!), but also looking forward to looping with my current 4th graders into 5th. Outside of school: I am looking forward to finalizing my middle child's college plans to attend Marquette, possibly having the oldest come home from Philly/Temple University and of course figuring out how to pay for this all in the fall! ;) Good news is, I get to move my middle kid into Marquette, which is in Milwaukee, which has cheese curds! And if I play my cards right, maybe I will also get to be the one who helps the oldest move into his new apartment in Philly on Aug 1.

Animal Legends (3rd-5th) The teacher, with a "huge" class of 12 or so kids, integrated Native American shapes, painting, writing and drama all into one lesson. Examples of formative assessment was having her students use the anchor chart with shapes, which was displayed, and students discussing and sharing their shapes they used and the story of their painting, as it relates to the culture they are studying. Also, she uses class rubrics and check lists to monitor progress, as well as to have peers evaluate the work . The coolest thing was she choose one story which a kid wrote, and she wrote is on chart paper and the kids did a read through/designed a play and then acted out the story. She could have used more equitable ways to call on kids. Beth Geise

Formative assessment, students practiced drawing different shapes before drawing their own work of art. The teacher also walked around asking questions and listening to students talk about their art. She made sure they were able to interpret what they were learning. There was an anchor chart for them to reference for shapes, as well as, examples of animals and paintings. Other ways she could have used formative assessment: white boards to draw a specific shape. Thumbs Up, thumbs down, to decide whether a color was bright or not, since they had to use bright colors. And, randomization to call on students, instead of just those with their hands raised.
Noel Parker

Common Sense Media: Media Arts: Modeling: The Digital Demo:

The teacher led the lesson by using the technique of modeling to demonstrate the standard with clear instructions and explanations. The teacher provided the students with a sample of the work, instead of just the rubric. This teacher, to check student progress, could randomly draw student names to get an update on student progress, questions or concerns. The teacher will then be able to gage if the students need extra assistance. Since this class is already engaged in their computers, one fun way to randomly pick names is by using a computer application, such as Class Dojo. Students seem to enjoy seeing their personalized character pop up instead of the teacher just randomly calling names.
~A.Malone

I believe giving choice during any project will make the students feel that they have a voice in how they want to represent what they have learned. In my own classroom, I would like to incorporate more freedom of choice for my students where they can highlight their own skills or learning strategies. Choice can give the students the motivation to care about what they are learning.

I love 5th grade and am excited to improve on the things I taught two years ago. I'm also looking forward to prepping some projects later in the summer to make sure I'm ready to go when we start in August.
One thing I'm looking forward to outside of school is finishing moving. I have been moving for the last 2 weeks and I'm excited to be finished and get everything back in order.
-Katie

Animal Legends

I watched the video integrating art into writing using animal legends. The teacher used many types of formative assessment throughout the clips. At the beginning of the video the teacher used anchor charts to demonstrate what she wanted from the students. She was then able to look back at these charts in order to monitor students level of understanding. Following their art designs students were asked to discuss what they created with a partner. This allowed the teacher to make sure students were interpreting the work correctly. The lesson continued with the students creating their own legend and finished with a performance of a legend from the students. There were other additional formative assessments being used. She could have used the ideas given by Dylan William. Specifically Technique 5: Make self-reports consequential. This could have been used during the initial introduction of the symbols and legends.
-Katie

UDL

I went to a one day UDL training this year. One of the major takeaways for me is that UDL is a process. It is not something you can just start and be at 100% in a year. It takes time but the most important part is starting. Taking one lesson and trying to design that lesson to fit the needs of all learners, not just the learners in your room this year. One of the other key takeaways for me was asking myself what is it that I really want my students to know; what standard are we trying to meet? If my students aren't working on a writing standard then I should not force them to meet the standard using writing. It is about giving students choice in showing what they know, making sure they have access to the curriculum and engaging them in the material. I believed I was giving my students choices until I went to the UDL PD and then I realized I have a lot more work to do to be able to actually design a lesson for all learners.
-Katie

The instructor provides a platform for the students to not only learn and understand a culture, Irish, but showed them how an Irish Drum is played. The formative assessment was during the dancing. The students were taught the moves and then went on to perform the dance. Experiencing culture creates an impact which engages and stays with the student. The teacher also had the students answer questions about information they learned.
Pame' Rose
