What if you only had one moment, one shot to share your voice with the world? What would you say? What would you wish to tell the world about your life, your expectations, your doubts, your desires, your values, your emotions, your dreams? What would your message be?

Communication becomes effective when used with precision. We will explore the power of language to express ourselves through lyrics, poetry, reflective prose writing and position papers (in preparation for debates). We will use writing and self-expression to articulate our dreams for ourselves and our community. Our ethical questions will focus on issues concerning democracy, social justice, and human rights through debates, lyric, poetry, and speech analysis, and writing . We will use physics and technology to create a means of communication, including electrical, sound/music and light signals.

You will collaborate with up to 3 other students. You and your teammates will work over a 6-week period to prepare a live performance/presentation. You will first work to design and construct an amplifier and a housing unit that will hold the amplifier and a speaker. Each group will use software to write an original piece of electronic music with original lyrics or spoken word. You may also incorporate instruments if you choose. You will also create a light display and/or theatrical lighting that will be a visual interpretation of the lyrics/spoken word and music you have created. You and your group will give a performance using our sound system combining all the elements (sound, words, and light) you have created.

Essential Questions

1. What is your message?

2. How do you receive? How do you transmit?

3. Is what you say as important as how you say it?

End Products

Sound System

Lyrics & Musical Composition

Recording

Album Art (concrete poem)

Final Live Performance
