Creating a Song to Describe How to Write a Paragraph

Students will be taught the process of writing a paragraph and the structural components. After modeling and some practice, students will be given the opportunity to put this process into a song for future utilization. Students can have time to surf the web for a preferred song and will change the lyrics to fit the steps of the paragraph writing process. They can then have the opportunity to record themselves. The steps of the process should be in consistent with classroom materials so that all songs carry the same language no matter the rhythm/music.

In your classroom, create 3 stations. Each station will have a different sensory bag. The purpose of the activity is for students to write about what they touch, smell, and hear in the bags. In one bag you have cooked ramen (to touch without looking). In one bag, you have something that smells good (students don't look just smell) and in the third bag put something inside that can crinkle (for students to move it around and write about the noise it makes).

Each station will also have a different writing output activity

pen to paper

typing

drawing

The goal is for students to connect sensory details in their writing to concrete experiences and to explore different ways to express their ideas in writing.

"Once upon a time, there was a..." sentence starter.

Each student adds on the next part of the story for 1 minute then passes it on as they get the student's from the left. Sort of a round robin telephone kind of process. After once around, they will break into groups and present one of the stories. They can either storyboard, act out a scene, or build a lego construction about it.
