SaLiS helps students design a science experiment showed me that AI can be useful when it guides students to think, rather than just giving them answers. By asking questions about variables, fair testing, predictions and procedures, the chatbot helps students develop their own ideas and improve their scientific thinking.

However, I see some challenges in using this with a lower-profile class. Some students may not feel confident sharing their ideas or using AI on their own. They may also accept AI’s answers without questioning them. Therefore, teachers still need to guide students, model how to question AI, and help them use AI as a tool rather than simply copying its answers.

I like the emphasis on “ pedagogy first, students at the centre” It reminds me of the importance of starting with what students need to learn and the best way for them to learn before thinking whether AI is the best tool to support our learners.

Individual: Thank you so much for the sharings today! :) Like how the focus is placed on the considerations of various pedagogies to support student agency and critical thinking through metacognitive instructional tools/strategies. Like how the inquiry phenomena is used to teach students to ask good question progressively. Asking good questions is also an area of need and a skill needed for students to use with Salis effectively, CORE sounds helpful in scaffolding the process. Thanks!

Action: Sense making together is critical to build knowledge and deeper conceptual understanding. Would be more intentional in getting students to discuss, think, craft first before tapping on AI purposefully for feedback and refinement, so that student agency and critical thinking is not taken away from our Science learners.

Challenge: As a teacher in the classroom, I worry if students would use AI as a way to look for answers instead of critically thinking through before answering the questions. It is essential that they learn how to write prompts to better scaffold their thinking.

Affirmation: Technology can be in various forms. AI and Salis are two of the many. Using tools like google spreadsheet is easy and quick for presenting the data to the students. Vibe coding to make the applications is something interesting to explore.

The examples shared today affirmed the critical role teachers play as the primary designers and pedagogical experts, using AI as a teaching assistant rather than a replacement. AI adds genuine value when it is purposefully integrated to support learning and provide timely feedback. However, for lower-readiness students, language can be a significant barrier. They may struggle to understand and process AI-generated feedback, limiting their ability to act on it independently and make meaningful improvements. This highlights the continued importance of teacher scaffolding and professional judgement in ensuring that AI genuinely enhances student learning. Therefore, I wonder what forms of technology or AI-enabled support would be most appropriate and accessible for lower-readiness students.

The CORE approach shared was a good framework in setting correct routines in students-facing when they connect with AI for purposeful scaffolding.

Action - Explaining in the approach of Think first- Use AI with purpose - check - decide - explain; get them to acknowledge the role of AI in scaffolding their learning and the need to check the AI response against what they know and the evidence they have gathered. I like the idea that Ying Yin shared where teachers are required to give students the necessary scaffolding in using AI to make their learning meaningful and not turning the AI as an answer generator. The best outcomes are when AI is treated as a tool that supports learning and not the hard work of thinking.

Action: The use of AI depends on the learners' profile as well as how the AI tools can help in the students' learning. Hence, when considering the use of AI, we should always remind ourselves to put

pedagogy first and technology as enabler of learning.
